Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan and execute detailed audit procedures for assigned financial statement areas and business processes, ensuring tests are aligned to audit objectives and risk assessments.
  • Perform SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) and internal control testing including design and operating effectiveness testing, documenting evidence and control walkthroughs to support management sign-off and external auditor needs.
  • Prepare and maintain high-quality audit working papers and supporting documentation in accordance with audit methodology and firm/internal standards to ensure auditability and knowledge transfer.
  • Conduct substantive testing of account balances and transactions (e.g., revenue, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory) using sampling techniques and analytical procedures to validate financial information.
  • Analyze general ledger details, reconciliations, and journal entries to identify unusual items, errors, or potential misstatements and escalate issues with supporting analysis.
  • Execute data-driven audit procedures using Excel, ACL, IDEA, SQL, or other analytics tools to identify exceptions, trends, and anomalies across large datasets.
  • Assist with risk assessments and update process-level and entity-level risk inventories to support audit planning and resource allocation.
  • Support the preparation of audit programs and checklists that map risks to controls, including the design of test steps and expected evidence.
  • Coordinate and liaise with process owners and business stakeholders to schedule testing, collect required documentation, and obtain timely responses to audit inquiries.
  • Document findings clearly and prepare concise remediation recommendations and management responses for control deficiencies and process improvements.
  • Assist external auditors during statutory and regulatory audits by providing requested documentation, explanations of processes, and status updates on remediation activities.
  • Monitor and track remediation of control deficiencies, compiling status reports and following up with business units until corrective actions are implemented and tested.
  • Support continuous auditing and monitoring initiatives by developing scripts, audit queries, and exception reports to enable ongoing risk oversight.
  • Perform walkthroughs and interviews with stakeholders to validate process flows, control activities, and system configurations as part of internal control assessments.
  • Validate transactional and master-data integrity in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Workday) through control testing and system access reviews.
  • Apply accounting standards (GAAP or IFRS) to assess the financial reporting impact of identified issues and collaborate with finance teams to quantify potential misstatements.
  • Prepare clear, executive-level summaries and presentation materials for audit leads and management to communicate scope, findings, and action plans.
  • Participate in fraud risk assessments and assist with ad-hoc inquiries or investigations into suspected fraud, conflicts of interest, or non-compliance.
  • Maintain and update audit time budgets, complete time tracking and billing tasks accurately, and support engagement status reporting to audit management.
  • Contribute to team efficiency by recommending process automation, control standardization, and best practices for documentation and testing methodologies.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes, accounting pronouncements, and auditing standards; proactively incorporate new requirements into audit procedures and training sessions.
  • Assist in onboarding and coaching junior team members and interns by demonstrating audit techniques, review expectations, and documentation standards.
  • Support cross-functional projects such as ERP implementations, process redesigns, or control remediations by providing audit perspective and testing post-implementation controls.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of sensitive financial and personnel information and adhere to professional ethics and company information security policies.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) projects that require audit input, status tracking, or evidence collection.
  • Participate in process-improvement initiatives driven by internal audit, including testing of redesigned processes and monitoring post-implementation controls.
  • Assist with control self-assessment programs and training materials for process owners to strengthen first-line controls and ownership.
  • Help maintain and improve audit templates, checklists, and knowledge bases to increase consistency and scalability across audit engagements.
  • Provide periodic support to external audit coordination, including preparation of schedules and timely responses to requests during busy season.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Solid understanding of accounting principles (US GAAP and/or IFRS) and how they apply to financial reporting and audit testing.
  • Practical experience with internal control frameworks (COSO) and SOX compliance testing including control design and operating effectiveness procedures.
  • Proficiency in Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data modeling) for financial analysis and audit evidence preparation.
  • Hands-on experience with audit and data analytics tools such as ACL, IDEA, Tableau, Power BI, or similar for exception testing and large dataset analysis.
  • Basic SQL knowledge for querying ERP and ledger systems to extract transactional data for testing and analytics.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Workday, NetSuite) and understanding of common financial modules and system controls.
  • Working knowledge of audit documentation platforms and engagement management systems (TeamMate, CaseWare, CCH ProSystem fx, or equivalent).
  • Ability to perform statistical and non-statistical sampling and apply sampling methodologies to substantive testing.
  • Competence in preparing clear audit reports, findings memo, and remediation plans with quantitative and qualitative impact assessments.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements relevant to the organization (SEC reporting, tax compliance, industry-specific regulations).
  • Experience applying data privacy and information security considerations when handling sensitive financial data.
  • Basic scripting or automation skills (Python, VBA) are a plus for designing repeatable analytic procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with accounting major and coursework in auditing; progress toward CPA or other professional certification (e.g., CIA, ACCA).
  • Master’s in Accounting, Master of Professional Accounting, or MBA with accounting concentration preferred for accelerated advancement.
