Primary Functions

  • Manage the end-to-end auction process by coordinating lot intake, arranging professional photography, writing detailed lot descriptions, assigning reserve prices in consultation with consignors, and ensuring all legal and title requirements are met prior to listing or sale.
  • Conduct valuations and condition assessments for consignments, preparing written appraisals and provenance documentation to support accurate cataloguing and buyer trust.

  • Host live auctions with professional chant/patter, bid calling, and pace control to encourage competitive bidding while maintaining a clear and engaging presence that reduces bidder confusion and increases final sale prices.
  • Operate and manage online bidding platforms in real time during hybrid auctions, troubleshoot bidder issues, and coordinate with IT/support to ensure seamless livestream and bidding functionality.
  • Manage bidder registration, approval, and bidder verification processes, ensuring compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) policies where applicable.
  • Negotiate with consignors on estimates, reserve prices, seller commissions, and sale terms, presenting market data and comparable sales to set realistic expectations.
  • Oversee invoicing, payment processing, and settlement for buyers and consignors, ensuring accurate commission calculations, timely payouts, and reconciliation of accounts receivable and payable.
  • Supervise and train supporting staff including clerks, ringmen, cataloguers, and lot handlers to ensure consistent operational standards, safety, and professionalism during auction events.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with repeat consignors, institutional clients, dealers, and collectors to generate recurring business and long-term consignments.
  • Analyze auction results and KPIs (sell-through rates, average hammer price, gross commission income) to recommend and implement pricing, marketing, and operational improvements.
  • Prepare and present post-auction reports to consignors and senior management, detailing realized prices, buyer demographics, fees, and inventory disposition.
  • Coordinate physical logistics such as lot staging, transport, storage, condition checks, and pick-up/delivery scheduling to ensure items are presented appropriately and transferred to buyers efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with local and national regulations regarding auctions, licensing, permits, sales taxes, and sale of restricted items (e.g., firearms, vehicles, livestock) and implement policies that mitigate legal risk.
  • Facilitate and participate in estate liquidation and on-site auctions, managing client communication, timeline expectations, and professional handling of personal effects and sensitive consignments.
  • Act as the public face and brand ambassador at auctions, trade shows, appraisal events, and community charity sales to raise awareness and attract new consignments and bidders.
  • Collaborate with in-house or third-party appraisers, restorers, photographers, and shipping vendors to enhance lot presentation and value realization.
  • Design and implement buyer incentive programs, loyalty schemes, and catalog previews (soft previews, VIP preview nights) to drive higher bidder participation and premium prices.
  • Monitor market trends, comparable auction results, and industry news to continually refine estimates, categories, and marketing strategies and to advise consignors on timing and positioning for maximum return.
  • Manage dispute resolution and claims related to misdescriptions, condition issues or non-payment; work to negotiate fair settlements or follow legal and internal escalation procedures when required.
  • Prepare and manage auction budgets, vendor contracts, and procurement for event services such as venue rental, sound systems, livestream providers, and security.
  • Implement safety protocols and crowd control measures during live events to protect staff, consignments, and attendees while complying with venue and local authority guidelines.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with ad-hoc market research projects and competitor analysis to support pricing strategy and catalog segmentation.
