  • Calculate Actual Cash Value (ACV) and diminished value assessments by researching market comparables, vehicle history, pre-loss condition, mileage, options, and regional price factors to establish defensible settlement values.
  • Determine total loss thresholds and salvage potential by analyzing repair costs versus ACV, applying company policies, state regulations, and salvage disposition standards to recommend repair, total loss, or salvage retention.
  • Identify OEM repair procedures, structural repair requirements, and airbag/SRS deployment impacts to ensure estimate compliance with manufacturer repair guidelines and safety standards.
  • Capture high-quality forensic photographs and video of vehicles, damage areas, VIN locations, odometer readings, and identifying features to support claims, litigation, and subrogation efforts.
  • Decode and document Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN), option codes, trim packages, and factory-installed equipment to verify replacement parts and market value influences.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with policyholders, repairers, tow vendors, collision shops, and internal claims adjusters to explain findings, answer questions, and facilitate efficient claims resolution.
  • Negotiate repair scope, parts sourcing, and labor rates with repair facilities and parts suppliers to control claim costs while maintaining repair quality and safety.
  • Review and validate shop supplements, rebuttals, and repair notes to ensure additional damage claims are supported by inspection evidence and repair procedures.
  • Coordinate and schedule on-site and remote inspections, including dealer inspections, independent appraisals, and third-party specialty inspections for exotic or heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Maintain and update appraisal documentation and claims files promptly and accurately in the claims management system to support audits and downstream processes.
  • Perform salvage inspections and title branding reviews to determine salvageable components, reusable parts inventory, and disclosure obligations for branded titles.
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations for rental car needs, towing authorizations, and emergency repairs based on damage severity and customer circumstances.
  • Assist in subrogation and recovery investigations by documenting loss origin, third-party involvement, and potential liability evidence for further legal or recovery action.
  • Conduct arbitration preparation and, when required, testify in appraisal hearings or legal proceedings with concise, well-documented, and defensible appraisal reports.
  • Monitor and track parts availability, lead times, and aftermarket vs OEM decisions to set accurate repair timeframes and claim reserves.
  • Perform pre-repair and post-repair inspections to validate completed work, quality, and alignment with the originally approved estimate and repair procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of paint procedures, corrosion protection, and refinish cycles to accurately estimate material usage, paint time, and related costs.
  • Execute mechanical diagnosis for driveability issues related to collision events, coordinating with diagnostic technicians to determine necessary repairs versus pre-existing conditions.
  • Stay current with regulatory changes, state-specific total loss rules, and automotive industry trends that impact valuation, salvage handling, and claim settlement practices.
  • Maintain professional relationships with salvage yards, auction houses, RO/repair network partners, and parts suppliers to support fast disposition and cost-effective repairs.
  • Conduct periodic quality assurance reviews of estimates and appraisals to identify trends, training needs, or process improvements that enhance accuracy and reduce cycle time.
  • Utilize telematics data, vehicle history reports, and market valuation tools (e.g., Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, Black Book) to validate pre-loss condition and adjust ACV calculations accordingly.
  • Support training programs and mentorship for junior appraisers and claims staff, sharing best practices for inspections, estimating accuracy, and regulatory compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform ad-hoc site visits for complex or disputed claims at dealerships, fleet locations, auctions, or customer residences to validate claim information and facilitate rapid resolution.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to refine appraisal workflows, integrate new estimating tools, and optimize claims-processing KPIs such as cycle time, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
  • Assist claims auditors by providing appraisal documentation and participating in post-audit corrective action planning to improve compliance and reduce rework.
  • Support the vendor management team by evaluating repair facilities, providing feedback on repair quality, and contributing to preferred shop network selection.
  • Contribute to internal data collection and reporting efforts that track average repair costs, total loss ratios, and regional valuation trends for underwriting and reserving.
  • Help develop and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for appraisal inspections, supplement handling, and total loss determinations.
  • Represent the appraisal function in customer service escalations, offering technical explanations and settlement rationale to de-escalate issues and preserve customer trust.
  • Participate in regular calibration sessions with adjusters and estimators to ensure consistent estimating practices and equitable claim settlements across the region.
  • Provide input to product teams on enhancements to estimating software, reporting templates, and mobile inspection tools based on field feedback.
  • Contribute to pilot programs for remote estimating, augmented reality inspections, or AI-assisted damage detection by validating model outputs and recommending operational changes.
