- Translate engineering sketches, field measurements, and survey data into detailed construction and shop drawings with correct dimensions, tolerances, material callouts, and finish notes to support manufacturing and installation.
- Create and maintain parametric 3D models and assemblies in AutoCAD, Inventor, or SolidWorks to validate fit, clearance, and interference for complex mechanical and structural systems prior to fabrication.
- Develop and issue Bill of Materials (BOM), parts lists, and cut lists directly from CAD models or drawings to support procurement, fabrication planning, and cost estimation.
- Generate as-built drawings and update existing drawing sets based on field verification, site surveys, and change orders, ensuring version control and proper documentation of revisions.
- Coordinate drawing interfaces and model exchanges with architects, engineers (structural, MEP), contractors, and subcontractors to resolve clashes, align tolerances, and ensure constructability.
- Prepare detailed shop drawings for structural steel, ductwork, piping, equipment foundations, and custom components, including connection details, weld symbols, and fabrication notes.
- Apply and enforce CAD standards, layer conventions, naming schemes, dimensioning styles, and block libraries to ensure consistency, reusability, and efficient handover across projects.
- Perform clash detection and coordination reviews using Navisworks, BIM 360, or equivalent tools and document conflict resolution and mitigation plans with follow-up updates to the model/drawings.
- Support the project team by producing permit-ready construction documents and responding to permit authority requests for information (RFIs) and revision submissions.
- Prepare detailed installation drawings and erection sequences for on-site crews, including lifting points, anchorage details, bolt patterns, and installation tolerances.
- Collaborate with procurement and fabrication shops to clarify drawing intent, provide technical clarifications, and make quick drawing revisions to support accelerated manufacturing schedules.
- Produce detailed cabling, conduit, and equipment layout drawings for electrical and control systems, coordinating with MEP engineers to ensure spacing and service access.
- Implement GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and tolerance annotation where required to communicate manufacturing requirements clearly and minimize rework.
- Convert legacy paper or scanned drawings into vectorized CAD files, clean up geometry, and create updated digital drawing sets suitable for modern BIM/CAD workflows.
- Create standard detail libraries, templates, and reusable blocks to accelerate future design work while maintaining compliance with company and industry drafting standards.
- Conduct quality control and drawing QA checks—verifying dimensions, scale, notes, callouts, and cross-references before issuing drawings for review or release.
- Support project managers by estimating drafting hours, tracking drawing revision cycles, and reporting drawing status against project timelines and milestones.
- Produce layout and fabrication drawings for sheet metal, piping spools, duct prefabrication, and mechanical assemblies with bends, seams, and cut patterns specified.
- Provide technical CAD support on site during critical installation phases, including taking measurements, clarifying drawing intent, and issuing urgent drawing revisions to accelerate installation.
- Train junior CAD staff and drafters on best practices, CAD workflows, template usage, and company drawing standards to raise team capability and ensure consistent deliverables.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to streamline CAD processes, introduce automation (scripts, LISP routines), and integrate CAD outputs with downstream systems (ERP, PLM).
Secondary Functions
- Respond to RFIs, submittals, and technical queries in coordination with engineering and construction leads; document answers and update drawings accordingly.
- Maintain and manage centralized CAD/BIM libraries, templates, and version-controlled drawing repositories, ensuring backups and access controls.
- Support health, safety, and quality processes by incorporating safety clearances, access routes, and maintenance zones into layout drawings.
- Assist in preparing technical content for client presentations, tender packages, and procurement documentation (spec sheets, fabrication instructions).
- Participate in site visits and field inspections to verify conditions, collect measured data, and prepare sketches or photos to support drawing updates.
- Contribute to handover documentation including O&M drawings, spare parts lists, and as-built model exports in formats required by clients (DWG, IFC, PDF).
- Coordinate with IT and CAD administrators to ensure CAD software, add-ons, and custom toolsets are installed, updated, and optimized for performance.
- Support multidisciplinary design reviews and constructability workshops, documenting action items and updating drawings to reflect agreed changes.
