Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Inspect damaged vehicles and interpret repair plans, OEM repair procedures, and insurance estimates to determine required body work, parts, and labor hours; document damage and recommended repairs clearly for estimators and service advisors.
  • Perform structural straightening and alignment using frame racks, hydraulic pulling systems, measuring fixtures and OEM alignment specifications to restore vehicle geometry to manufacturer tolerances.
  • Remove, replace and align body panels (fenders, doors, quarter panels, hoods, bumpers) using hand and power tools while ensuring proper panel gaps and closures per OEM fitment standards.
  • Execute welding and metal fabrication tasks (MIG/TIG, spot welding, resistance welding) for steel and aluminum components, following safety protocols and OEM-approved repair techniques to maintain crashworthiness.
  • Repair and restore plastic and composite components using adhesives, welding techniques, plastic fillers, reinforcement, and plastic welding tools while following manufacturer repair limits.
  • Perform dent removal, shrink/stretch metal straightening, and precision hammer-and-dolly work to return exterior surfaces to smooth, factory-contour shape before finishing.
  • Prepare substrates for painting: stripping, sanding, feathering, corrosion treatment, seam sealer application, and priming using appropriate chemical and mechanical methods to ensure adhesion and corrosion protection.
  • Carry out paint mixing, spray application and refinishing processes in controlled paint booths, matching color and texture using PPG/PPG/G.M./BASF color systems and digital color-matching tools where applicable.
  • Mask, disassemble and reassemble vehicle trim, glass, lights and accessories safely and in correct sequence to protect components and preserve alignment/operation.
  • Execute corrosion control and rust repair procedures including welding out rust, applying rust inhibitors, and using galvanic bonding or OEM repair compounds as specified.
  • Calibrate and test advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) sensors, cameras, and radar modules after body or windshield replacement using OEM-aligned diagnostic tools and calibration fixtures.
  • Use measuring systems (tram gauges, laser measurement, dimensional equipment) to verify restored structural dimensions and provide measurement reports for quality control and insurance documentation.
  • Follow OEM repair procedures and structural repair manuals (e.g., factory service manuals) to determine allowable repair methods vs. replacement, and to document compliance for warranty and safety records.
  • Coordinate with parts department, suppliers and vendors to order and track OEM and aftermarket parts, fasteners, adhesives, and materials required for timely repair completion.
  • Collaborate with estimators and insurance adjusters during damage appraisal and supplement creation, providing technical detail, photos, and repair method justification as needed.
  • Maintain meticulous repair documentation, job cards and digital photos from intake through delivery for customer communication, warranty support and insurance audit trails.
  • Conduct final quality assurance inspection and road tests as appropriate to verify mechanical operation, weather sealing, panel fitment, paint finish and overall safety before vehicle release.
  • Operate and maintain shop tools and equipment (frame racks, welders, compressors, paint booths, sanders, lifts) following preventive maintenance schedules and safety procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations: proper handling and disposal of paints, solvents, refrigerants, and hazardous materials, and use of PPE, ventilation and OSHA guidelines.
  • Mentor junior technicians and apprentices, providing hands-on coaching in body techniques, safe tool operation and OEM repair procedures to grow shop capability and skill depth.
  • Troubleshoot complex repair challenges (hidden structural damage, warped body panels, previous improper repairs) and recommend cost-effective, safety-compliant solutions; escalate complex structural or electronic issues when necessary.
  • Maintain efficient workflow and time management to meet production goals, cycle time targets and customer expectations while balancing quality and safety.
  • Apply aftermarket and OEM corrosion protection, undercoating or seam sealer where specified to maintain long-term durability of repaired areas.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the parts ordering process by identifying required part numbers, coordinating with parts suppliers and verifying delivered parts for correctness and condition.
  • Assist service advisors and estimators with additional damage discovery during teardown and provide technical rationale for supplements to insurance carriers.
  • Keep the work area clean, organize tools and inventory, and participate in daily shop housekeeping and 5S organization to maintain a safe, efficient environment.
  • Participate in continuous training programs, certification renewals (I‑CAR, ASE, OEM specific courses) and vendor-led product training to stay current with evolving repair methods.
  • Help maintain records for calibrations, paint mixing formulas and equipment service logs to ensure consistent repair quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Engage in customer-facing interactions when necessary to explain repair processes, timelines and safety considerations in clear, professional language.
  • Assist in shop safety audits, hazard reporting and corrective actions to continuously improve workplace safety and compliance.
  • Support management with weekly production reporting, repair time tracking and suggestions to improve throughput and reduce rework.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Structural repair and frame straightening (frame racks, pull systems, tram gauges, laser measuring).
  • MIG/TIG/spot welding experience, including aluminum and steel welding techniques per OEM guidelines.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED; vocational school or on-the-job apprenticeship preferred.

Preferred Education:
Technical certificate or diploma in Collision Repair, Automotive Technology, Welding, or related field; I‑CAR and ASE collision certifications preferred.
