Primary Functions

  • Execute precise color matching and blending techniques — including blending into adjacent panels, using test panels and spectrophotometers — to achieve seamless OEM or custom match on solid, metallic and pearlescent finishes.
  • Apply waterborne and solventborne paint systems in accordance with manufacturer and regulatory guidelines, adjusting gun settings, fluid tip sizes, air pressure and film thickness to optimize finish quality.
  • Inspect painted surfaces throughout the process and after cure, identifying defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, solvent pop, fisheye and fisheye prevention, and perform corrective sanding, buffing or recoat as required.
  • Sand and polish cured paint using appropriate grit progression, dual-action or rotary polishers and compounds to achieve showroom-quality gloss and a defect-free final finish.
  • Maintain and operate paint booth environmental controls (airflow, temperature, humidity), ensuring proper booth filtration, oven operation and compliance with shop cycle-time and cure specifications.

  • Perform corrosion protection and seam sealing applications where required, applying primers and anti-corrosion treatments to repaired areas before topcoat application.
  • Execute specialty finishes such as metallic blends, candy paints, multi-stage custom jobs and pinstriping following client specifications, including custom masking and layering techniques.
  • Coordinate with parts, body and detailing teams to stage vehicles for paint, confirm masking and fit prior to spray, and ensure timely handoffs to reduce rework and maximize shop efficiency.
  • Conduct final quality inspection and road-ready checks post-refinish, documenting paint quality, color match and finish metrics; address any customer or estimator concerns before vehicle delivery.
  • Manage inventory of refinish materials (paints, primers, thinners, abrasives, tapes) including stock rotation, reorder thresholds and receipt verification to avoid shortages and control costs.
  • Adhere to environmental, health and safety audits and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve cycle time, and raise first-time-right paint delivery rates.
  • Support digital workflow systems by inputting job status updates, paint codes used, labor time and notes into shop management or ERP systems for transparency and billing accuracy.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide subject-matter input to the shop manager on capital equipment needs (booth upgrades, ovens, mixing systems) and participate in vendor selection and evaluation.
