Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults on cars and light trucks using diagnostic scanners, multimeters, oscilloscope where required, wiring diagrams and OEM troubleshooting procedures to isolate root causes and develop repair plans.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance services including oil and filter changes, multi-point vehicle inspections, fluid exchanges, tire rotations and manufacturer-recommended service intervals with accurate documentation.
  • Inspect, remove and replace brake system components such as pads, shoes, rotors, drums, calipers, hydraulic lines and master cylinders; perform brake bleeding, ABS diagnostics and system calibration as required.
  • Troubleshoot and repair engine performance and drivability issues including ignition systems, fuel delivery, emissions control systems, sensors and engine control modules; execute compression and leak-down testing when indicated.
  • Service, diagnose and repair automatic and manual transmissions, clutches, transfer cases and differentials; perform fluid changes, filter replacement and basic transmission rebuild tasks within scope of shop capabilities.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle charging and starting systems—test and replace batteries, starters, alternators, wiring harnesses, fusible links and control relays to restore reliable operation.
  • Perform HVAC system diagnostics and repairs including refrigerant recovery and recharge, compressor/clutch replacement, heater core service and blower motor/resistor replacement (EPA 608 certification preferred/required).
  • Inspect and repair steering and suspension systems including tie rods, control arms, ball joints, struts, shocks and wheel bearings; perform alignment checks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Replace belts, hoses, water pumps, thermostats and other cooling system components; perform pressure tests and cooling system flushes to prevent overheating and maintain OEM specifications.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical/electronic systems such as sensors, actuators, body control modules, lighting systems, infotainment wiring and integrate aftermarket components per customer request.
  • Remove and replace exhaust system components, inspect catalytic converters and emissions hardware, perform exhaust leak testing and complete emissions-related repairs per local and federal regulations.
  • Perform tire services including mounting, dismounting, balancing, rotation, flat repairs and inspect for wear, recommending replacement and proper tire pressure management.
  • Complete accurate repair orders, estimate labor and parts, enter times and tech notes in the shop management system; verify part numbers and reconcile parts returns/warranties.
  • Conduct final test drives and functional checks to validate repair quality, document test results and confirm that customer concerns are resolved prior to vehicle delivery.
  • Collaborate with service advisors and parts staff to prioritize repairs, expedite parts procurement (OEM and aftermarket), and communicate timelines and cost estimates to customers.
  • Perform warranty and recall repairs following OEM procedures, complete required paperwork, submit repair photos and return parts as needed to process claims.
  • Support shop productivity by maintaining shop equipment (lifts, air compressors, diagnostic tools), performing routine calibration and reporting tool/service needs to management.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to junior technicians and apprentices; review completed work for quality, safety and adherence to OEM repair procedures.
  • Follow all workplace safety policies, hazardous materials handling, environmental disposal protocols for oils/refrigerants, and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
  • Stay current on manufacturer technical service bulletins (TSBs), software updates, and vehicle recalls; complete required manufacturer training and certification programs to expand technical capabilities.
  • Provide professional customer-facing communication when required: explain diagnostic findings in simple terms, recommend preventive maintenance and obtain authorization before work begins.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in parts inventory control by verifying incoming parts, returning incorrect items and flagging critical shortages to parts personnel.
  • Support service advisors with initial vehicle intake inspections, estimate generation and prioritization of safety-related repairs.
  • Help maintain shop KPI reporting (turn-around-time, rework rates, job completion accuracy) by submitting clean, timely repair documentation.
  • Participate in promotional or community events demonstrating technical expertise and representing the service department to customers.
  • Perform light fabrication, bracket installation and simple welding tasks to complete retrofit or repair jobs within scope.
  • Assist with vehicle staging, cleaning and basic detailing prior to customer delivery to ensure a professional presentation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process improvements, tooling upgrades and parts sourcing efficiencies.
  • Cross-train on related areas such as alignment equipment, tire service machines, or diagnostics to broaden departmental capability.
  • Temporarily cover overflow tasks in related departments (e.g., light body repairs or parts sales) as business needs dictate.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced vehicle diagnostics with OBD-II/UDS/CAN bus scanners and OEM-level diagnostic software (e.g., Techstream, IDS, VIDA, GScan, or equivalents).
  • ASE certification(s) or equivalent factory-specific certifications (ASE A1–A8 recommended; ASE L1 desirable).
  • Electrical diagnostics proficiency: multimeter, oscilloscope use, wiring diagram interpretation and circuit repair.
  • Brake, steering and suspension systems repair and alignment fundamentals.
  • Engine mechanical repair skills including timing belt/chain replacement, gasket sealing techniques and leak diagnosis.
  • Transmission service and basic repair experience (fluid/filter service, clutch replacement, torque converter service).
  • HVAC/R system service knowledge including refrigerant handling and EPA 608 compliance.
  • Proficient use of shop management systems, digital repair orders, OEM repair manuals and TSB lookup tools.
  • Tire and wheel service: mounting, balancing, rotation and TPMS diagnosis and programming.
  • Welding and metal fabrication basics (MIG/TIG or oxy-acetylene) for exhaust and bracket repairs.
  • Familiarity with emissions systems, catalytic converter replacement and readiness monitors.
  • Safe operation of shop equipment: vehicle lift operation, torque wrenches, air tools and fluid recycling systems.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
