Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform comprehensive vehicle diagnostics using OBD-II scanners, manufacturer-specific scan tools, multimeters, scope testers, and computerized diagnostic software to accurately identify engine, electrical, and drivability issues and document fault codes and test results.

Diagnose and repair engine mechanical and performance issues, including timing systems, cylinder head work, fuel injection systems, ignition systems, compression testing, and fuel pressure analysis to restore power, efficiency and emissions compliance.
Remove, repair, and install automatic and manual transmissions and transaxles, perform clutch replacements, torque converter diagnostics, fluid flushes, and transmission control module troubleshooting to ensure smooth shifting and driveline reliability.
Perform comprehensive electrical system diagnosis and repair, including battery and charging system testing, starter replacement, alternator testing, wiring harness repair, module replacement, sensor testing and CAN bus/network troubleshooting.
Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance services: oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, tire rotations, fluid top-offs, cabin and engine air filter replacement, belts and hose assessments, and manufacturer-recommended service intervals.
Diagnose and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including refrigerant recovery and recharge, compressor replacement, evaporator and condenser repairs, blower motor replacement, and HVAC control system troubleshooting.
Perform suspension and steering repairs, including strut and shock replacement, control arm and bushing replacement, wheel alignment checks, tie rod and ball joint replacement, and steering gearbox or rack repairs to maintain vehicle handling and tire life.
Conduct emission system diagnostics and repairs to meet local and federal emissions standards, including catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, EGR system, and evaporative emissions system diagnosis and repair.
Execute computerized reprogramming and software updates for vehicle control modules and adaptive systems when required by the manufacturer, ensuring proper vehicle calibration and functionality.
Read and interpret technical service bulletins (TSBs), wiring diagrams, service manuals, and schematic information to apply OEM-recommended repair procedures and maintain compliance with factory specifications.
Disassemble and reassemble complex assemblies (engines, transmissions, differentials) with precision, perform machining or coordinate with machine shops when necessary, and verify tolerances and clearances during reassembly.
Perform accurate parts identification and parts ordering, coordinate with parts department to obtain required components, inspect incoming parts for fit and quality, and update repair orders with part changes and labor allocations.
Complete and maintain detailed service documentation on repair orders, warranty claims, inspection sheets, and diagnostic logs to support billing, future repairs, and warranty processing.
Provide expert troubleshooting and hands-on repair for drivetrain components including axles, CV joints, differentials, transfer cases, and drive shafts, including balancing and vibration analysis when necessary.
Perform vehicle safety inspections and pre/post-repair road tests to validate successful repairs, detect secondary issues, and confirm customer concerns have been fully resolved before vehicle delivery.
Adhere to shop health, safety and environmental procedures, including proper handling and disposal of fluids, use of PPE, safe operation of lifts and shop equipment, and compliance with MSDS and OSHA guidelines.
Train, mentor and provide technical guidance to junior technicians and apprentices, share diagnostic strategies, and support continuous skill development and best practice adoption across the service team.
Collaborate with service advisors and customers to explain diagnostic findings, recommended repairs, cost estimates, repair timelines, and potential safety risks, maintaining professional and transparent communication.
Manage time and workflow effectively to meet productivity targets and flat-rate labor expectations while maintaining high-quality workmanship and minimizing comebacks.
Troubleshoot hybrid and electric vehicle systems (if trained), including high-voltage component isolation, battery health assessment, regenerative braking diagnostics, and adherence to high-voltage safety protocols.
Support warranty claim submissions by documenting failure analysis, labor times, and parts used; communicate with manufacturer technical support and process approvals when required.

Secondary Functions

Assist with shop organization, tool control, and inventory management, including tagging, storing and tracking specialty tools and maintaining consumable supplies.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as reducing repair cycle times, enhancing first-time-fix rates, and standardizing diagnostic and repair procedures.
Provide overflow support in customer-facing roles during peak periods when asked, including assisting service advisors with vehicle intake, test drives, or explaining completed services to customers.
Support fleet service operations by coordinating scheduled maintenance for company or client fleets, preparing maintenance logs, and recommending replacement schedules to minimize downtime.
Participate in manufacturer training programs, certification renewals, and vendor-led workshops to maintain up-to-date technical knowledge and certifications.
Maintain a clean, organized and safe workspace, ensuring tools and equipment are secured, floors are free of hazards, and work areas meet shop appearance standards.
Contribute to the development of repair guides, SOPs and quick reference documents to increase consistency across technicians and speed up common repairs.
