Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end installation of commercial audio-visual systems including displays, projectors, video walls, audio systems, microphones, matrix switchers, DSPs, amplifiers, and unified communications endpoints, ensuring each installation meets manufacturer specifications and project drawings.
  • Interpret electrical and AV system schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings to plan cable pathways, rack layouts, termination points, and equipment placements while coordinating with site construction teams and general contractors.
  • Run, terminate, and test structured cabling (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A/Cat7), fiber optic cabling (singlemode/multimode), coaxial, and speaker cable to industry standards (TIA/EIA), verifying continuity, bandwidth capability, and correct shielding.
  • Rack and wire AV equipment in server/AV closets, mount and secure racks and enclosures, install power distribution units (PDUs), and apply proper ventilation and cable management practices to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Configure and integrate AV control systems and basic programming support for control processors (Crestron Home/RoomView, Extron, AMX) in partnership with programmers; set up macros, room presets, and user interfaces per project requirements.
  • Install, configure, and test video conferencing solutions (Zoom Rooms, Microsoft Teams Rooms, Cisco Webex, Poly) including cameras, codecs, microphones, speakers, and room controllers to deliver consistent meeting experiences.
  • Implement signal distribution solutions including HDBaseT extenders, SDI/HD-SDI routing, HDMI distribution, video scalers, and video wall processors; verify signal integrity across long runs and multi-zone systems.
  • Perform audio system alignment and tuning using DSP tools, measurement microphones, and acoustic analysis software to optimize gain structure, EQ, and feedback suppression for meeting rooms, auditoriums, and house-of-worship environments.
  • Commission and test installed systems using structured test plans and checklists, perform burn-in, verify audio/video sync, measure latency, and produce punch lists of any defects or deviations for resolution.
  • Troubleshoot AV hardware and software issues on-site and remotely, applying root-cause analysis to electronics, cabling faults, firmware mismatches, network or power issues, and user configuration errors.
  • Collaborate closely with IT teams to integrate AV devices into corporate networks, configure IP addressing, VLANs, multicast, and QoS settings required for AV-over-IP deployments and remote management.
  • Install and terminate fiber optic connectors using fusion splicing and mechanical termination tools where required; perform OTDR and light source/power meter testing and document loss values.
  • Assemble, inventory, stage, and label AV equipment, parts, and materials pre-deployment to meet bill of materials and project delivery timelines; manage returns and swap-outs when necessary.
  • Provide on-site client training and handover documentation, demonstrate room operation, explain basic troubleshooting steps to end users, and deliver client-facing acceptance testing and sign-off procedures.
  • Maintain and update accurate as-built documentation, rack elevations, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, IP address lists, and configuration backups stored in company project management systems or cloud repositories.
  • Ensure compliance with local electrical codes, OSHA safety standards, and site-specific safety plans; use lift equipment, fall protection, and lockout/tagout practices where applicable.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, electricians, and building management to schedule power drops, conduit runs, drywall access, and site access windows to minimize project delays and site disruptions.
  • Manage time, travel logistics, and daily work reports for multiple concurrent installation projects, including accurate logging of labor hours, parts consumed, and site conditions.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance visits and scheduled service calls to update firmware, verify calibration, replace worn components, and extend system lifecycle reliability.
  • Support commissioning of large-scale AV projects such as auditoriums, stadium suites, corporate boardrooms, and higher-education lecture halls, ensuring all systems meet functional and performance criteria.
  • Follow company standard operating procedures for equipment handling, asset tagging, warranty claim initiation, and vendor RMA processes to ensure traceability and minimize downtime.
  • Stay current with AV industry trends, new products, software updates, and networked AV protocols (AVB, Dante, AES67, NDI) to recommend improvements and future-proof deployments.

  • Assist estimators and project managers with site surveys, scope verification, and pre-installation assessments to create accurate labor and materials estimates.
  • Provide technical input during the design review process to ensure feasible installation strategies, realistic lead times, and cost-effective system architecture.
  • Participate in post-installation reviews and lessons-learned sessions to improve installation standards, documentation templates, and QA checklists.
  • Support remote diagnostics and phone-based technical support for field teams and end users during off-hours as part of an on-call rotation.
  • Mentor junior technicians and apprentices on safe installation practices, cable termination standards, and basic system troubleshooting techniques.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs (e.g., Crestron, Extron, Dante, AVIXA CTS prep) to maintain and expand technical credentials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Structured cabling installation and testing (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A, fiber optics) with proficiency using cable testers, certifiers, and OTDRs.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; strong practical experience in AV or low-voltage work acceptable in lieu of formal degree.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Electronics, Audio Engineering, Telecommunications, or related technical field.
  • Certifications such as AVIXA CTS, Crestron Certified, Extron, Dante Certification, or manufacturer-specific credentials are highly desirable.
