Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver direct, compassionate care to infants and young toddlers including feeding (bottle and expressed breastmilk handling), nappy changes, sleep supervision and settling routines while adhering to individual care plans and allergy/dietary requirements.
  • Act as a named Key Person for allocated children: build strong relationships with babies and parents, maintain daily care diaries, and ensure continuity of care and consistent routines.

  • Ensure robust infection control and hygiene standards: clean and sterilise bottles and feeding equipment, launder bedding, sanitize toys and surfaces, and follow exclusion guidelines for illness.
  • Follow safe sleep policies and cot safety guidance at all times; maintain appropriate records and monitor sleeping babies regularly with documented checks.
  • Support mealtimes and snack routines, including preparing bottles, introducing weaning foods where appropriate, and promoting positive feeding practices in line with dietary plans and allergies.
  • Maintain correct staff-to-child ratios and support the Room Leader in monitoring occupancy and shift coverage to ensure safe and legal supervision.
  • Conduct daily room risk assessments and safety checks on equipment, cots, highchairs and play areas; record and escalate any hazards immediately.
  • Prepare the baby room environment each day: lay out resources, replenish nappies and supplies, set up learning stations, and ensure toys and equipment are safe and engaging.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with parents/carers at drop-off and pick-up times; provide verbal and written updates, respond to queries and work collaboratively on care plans.
  • Support transitions between rooms and settings (nursery, toddler room, home visits) by preparing handover notes, sharing developmental information and easing separation anxiety.
  • Implement individual behaviour and soothing strategies for infants and toddlers, using positive guidance techniques and consulting with parents on approaches that work at home.

  • Support continuous improvement by completing mandatory training (paediatric first aid, safeguarding, food hygiene) and applying new learning to practice.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the nursery (kitchen, administration, maintenance) to coordinate meals, supply orders and facility upkeep ensuring seamless operation of the baby room.

Secondary Functions

  • Supervise and mentor trainee nursery assistants and apprentices; provide on-the-job coaching, feedback and support with tasks.
  • Assist with stock control: monitor nappies, formula, nappies bins, cleaning supplies and toys; submit orders and rotate supplies to minimise waste.
  • Support parent workshops and outreach events (weaning classes, sleep clinics) and contribute to promotional material and social media content showcasing the baby room.
  • Participate in quality assurance processes and internal audits; contribute to action plans and implement recommended improvements.
  • Undertake light administrative tasks such as photocopying, maintaining children’s files, updating digital records and producing otus/learning summaries for parent meetings.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Childcare and Education, CACHE qualification, Child Development certificate, or an Associate degree in Early Childhood Education.
