Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive inbound shipments, verify manifests and purchase orders, inspect cartons and pallets for damage, note exceptions, and document discrepancies for timely supplier and store resolution.
  • Unload trucks and trailers safely and efficiently using pallet jacks, dollies, and hand trucks while following all equipment and safety protocols.
  • Accurately count and scan incoming product into the inventory management system (IMS/RF scanning), ensuring correct SKU, quantity, and location coding to maintain real-time stock visibility.
  • Break down pallets, sort cartons by category and department, and route product to appropriate staging areas or sales floor replenishment queues to support merchandising plans.
  • Execute daily and periodic cycle counts and physical inventories, reconcile variances, research root causes of discrepancies, and initiate corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy.
  • Stage and prepare merchandise for floor sets and promotions, coordinate with visual merchandisers, and assemble planogram items and display fixtures as required.
  • Replenish sales floor stock continuously throughout the shift, prioritize high-turn and critical items, and perform backstock organization to ensure quick access during peak hours.
  • Process returns, damaged goods, and supplier credits according to company policy, segregating unsellable items and documenting disposition for accounting and vendor follow-up.
  • Label, tag, and repackage products as needed, including price changes and clearance labeling, to ensure correct point-of-sale information and customer clarity.
  • Operate inventory control tools (RF scanners, mobile computers, handheld tablets) and update system locations, bin assignments, and transfer requests to maintain accurate stock records.
  • Coordinate transfers and interstore shipments — prepare packing lists, palletize outgoing product, and hand off to carriers while ensuring appropriate documentation and tracking.
  • Communicate proactively with store leadership and floor associates about stock levels, anticipated shortages, or delivery exceptions to minimize out-of-stocks and support sales goals.
  • Monitor product shelf life, perform first-in/first-out (FIFO) rotation, and manage perishables or seasonal inventory to reduce waste and maximize sell-through.
  • Support markdown and clearance processes by pulling marked items from stockroom, preparing relocation or discount signage, and recording inventory adjustments in the system.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized backroom environment by enforcing housekeeping standards, removing debris, and ensuring clear aisles and correct storage to comply with loss prevention and OSHA guidelines.
  • Follow shrink reduction and security protocols, including secured storage of high-value items, surveillance awareness, and incident reporting to reduce internal and external theft.
  • Assist with freight management and carrier interactions — verify carrier paperwork, coordinate receiving schedules, and escalate late or partial deliveries to management.
  • Train and mentor temporary or new backroom team members on standard operating procedures, equipment operation, safety policies, and best practices for merchandise handling.
  • Complete accurate paperwork and electronic logs for receiving, transfers, damages, and inventory adjustments; escalate system errors and collaborate with operations support to resolve issues.
  • Support emergency and loss events by identifying affected inventory, isolating stock, and providing detailed documentation for insurance or recovery processes.
  • Monitor and report low-stock SKUs, provide reorder recommendations to inventory planners or managers, and participate in replenishment cycle reviews to maintain appropriate safety stock levels.
  • Participate in daily operational huddles, communicate priorities and backroom capacity, and align receiving and replenishment activities with store traffic and promotional needs.
  • Operate and maintain basic store equipment (pallet jacks, hand trucks, box cutters) and coordinate scheduled maintenance or repair requests to ensure continuous operational readiness.
  • Assist with store opening/closing tasks as needed, including staging product for early morning floor refills or securing backroom inventory at close of business.
  • Apply product knowledge to identify seasonal, high-value, or restricted items requiring special handling and communicate related procedures to the team to ensure compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Support inventory reporting by compiling count results, preparing variance summaries, and contributing to root-cause analyses for inventory shrink or mis-picks.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by documenting inefficiencies in backroom layout, receiving flow, or storage that impact speed-to-shelf and propose actionable solutions.
  • Serve as a liaison between store operations and distribution center teams to expedite urgent restocks and clarify product discrepancies.
  • Assist in basic merchandising tasks on the sales floor during peak periods, including restocking high-demand displays and ensuring signage is accurate.
  • Participate in safety audits and loss prevention reviews, implement corrective actions from audits, and maintain compliance with company policies and local regulations.
  • Provide ad-hoc administrative support including filing receiving paperwork, scanning invoices, and updating vendor claim records when required.
  • Support cross-functional projects such as seasonal resets, inventory system updates, or new store openings with backroom setup and process documentation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Inventory Management Systems (IMS) — proficiency with RF scanning, barcode technology, and common retail inventory platforms (e.g., Oracle NetSuite, Lightspeed, SAP Retail, NCR Counterpoint).
  • Receiving & Dock Operations — proven ability to execute accurate receiving, manifest reconciliation, and proper staging of incoming shipments.
  • Cycle Counting & Physical Inventory — experience conducting cycle counts, root-cause analysis of variances, and adjusting stock records.
