A Baggage Handler (also known as Ramp Agent or Airport Baggage Agent) is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely handling of passenger baggage and air cargo on the airport ramp and in baggage facilities. This role includes loading and unloading aircraft, sorting and staging baggage, operating ground service equipment (GSE), following weight-and-balance and safety procedures, coordinating with airline and ground operations teams, and delivering exceptional passenger service under time-sensitive and weather-exposed conditions.

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Load and unload passenger baggage, checked luggage, and air cargo from aircraft using conveyor belts, belt loaders, dollies and container loaders while following airline-specific weight and balance guidelines and ensuring distribution that meets aircraft trim and safety requirements.
- Sort, tag, and stage inbound and outbound baggage by destination, flight number, and priority status (e.g., priority, connecting flights, special handling) to ensure accurate delivery and prevent misrouted items.
- Operate ground service equipment (GSE) including belt loaders, tugs, baggage tractors, container loaders, and baggage carts safely and efficiently, conducting pre- and post-operation checks and reporting defects immediately.
- Perform manual lifting, carrying, and positioning of baggage and cargo within established safety and ergonomic guidelines; use lifting aids and team lift procedures for heavy or oversized items to minimize injury risk.
- Inspect baggage and cargo for damage, security issues, or hazardous materials indicators and escalate suspected prohibited or dangerous goods to the relevant supervisor or security/TSA representative in accordance with regulatory guidance.
- Adhere to all airport and airline safety, security, and operational procedures, including ramp safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, vehicle speed limits, and radio communication etiquette.
- Verify baggage tags, flight information, and special handling instructions against flight manifests and baggage reconciliation systems to ensure accurate load planning and to reduce mishandled baggage incidents.
- Complete baggage reconciliation, manifesting, and system updates using airline or third-party baggage handling software, barcode scanners, and handheld devices to maintain real-time tracking and accountability.
- Communicate proactively with flight crews, gate agents, cargo agents, and other ramp personnel to coordinate load sequencing, priority items, late changes, and special requests while maintaining on-time performance targets.
- Secure loose items, oversized bags, sports equipment, musical instruments, and special-care luggage using appropriate restraints and containerization techniques to protect items and prevent in-flight hazards.
- Assist in meeting aircraft turnaround time targets by prioritizing tasks, sequencing baggage movements, and working cooperatively with fuel, catering, and maintenance teams to support scheduled departures.
- Follow weather-related and seasonal operational adjustments (de-icing coordination, rain protection, heat and cold protocols) to protect baggage and maintain service continuity during adverse conditions.
- Handle unaccompanied baggage, delayed baggage, and mishandled items according to airline policies, including documenting incident reports, tagging items for tracing, and preparing notifications for lost-and-found or baggage claims.
- Support special handling for VIP, medical equipment, live animals, and fragile shipments by following airline and regulatory handling procedures, ensuring comfort and safety for live animals when required.
- Participate in security screenings, inspections, and audits by TSA or airline authorities; maintain awareness of current prohibited item lists and security advisories to ensure compliance.
- Perform routine ramp housekeeping: clear debris from work areas, secure loose straps and covers, park equipment in designated zones, and maintain clear access paths to aircraft and service doors.
- Load and unload bulk cargo, unit load devices (ULDs), and containers into and out of aircraft holds following container build-up and breakdown plans, ensuring correct orientation and secure locking of ULDs.
- Respond to irregular operations (IROPS) such as delayed flights, re-routes, or unscheduled diversions by reprioritizing baggage flow, coordinating with operations teams, and documenting changes to manifests and baggage systems.
- Coordinate and physically move oversized or non-standard baggage items (e.g., skis, bicycles, wheelchairs) using appropriate handling protocols, ensuring items are properly labeled and protected to minimize damage claims.
- Maintain accurate logs of work orders, damage reports, incident notifications, and equipment malfunctions; escalate unresolved mechanical, security, or logistical issues to supervisors promptly.
- Train, mentor, and support new ramp hires on safe baggage handling techniques, equipment operation, and airline-specific processes to ensure consistent performance and regulatory compliance across the team.
Secondary Functions
- Provide courteous passenger assistance at baggage claim when requested: locate missing items, explain claim procedures, and direct customers to lost & found or airline customer service desks.
- Help prepare and stage passenger wheelchair and mobility equipment for transfer to/from aircraft in coordination with passenger services and special assistance teams.
- Assist in basic preventive maintenance and cleaning of ground equipment and baggage areas, coordinating repairs with GSE technicians and reporting hazards or safety concerns immediately.
- Participate in scheduled safety meetings, toolbox talks, and recurrent training sessions to maintain certifications, refresh procedures, and improve ramp safety culture.
- Support seasonal or peak-time operational surges by adjusting shift priorities, volunteering for overtime when available, and helping to triage backlog scenarios in partnership with lead agents.
- Contribute to inventory control by helping count and restock baggage handling supplies such as straps, covers, tags, and trolleys, and logging consumables usage for procurement.
- Aid cargo and mail teams during cross-functional peak demands by assisting with pallet movement, manifest support, or temporary sorting tasks when authorized.
- Participate in emergency response procedures (spill containment, equipment failure protocols, ramp evacuation) as directed and assist in post-event documentation and review.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficient operation of ground service equipment (belt loaders, baggage tractors, tugs, ULD loaders, and dollies) with demonstrated safety checks and defect reporting.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
