Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet customers courteously as they approach the checkout area, confirm any bagging preferences (e.g., paper, plastic, reusable bags), and ensure a positive, helpful first/last impression of the store.

  • Follow sanitation and food safety guidelines for handling fresh and perishable items, including appropriate bagging and separation of raw meats, produce, and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Inspect items visually for damage or leakage before bagging, and notify the cashier or manager of spills, broken items, or product recalls to protect customers and reduce losses.
  • Maintain an organized bagging station and a well-stocked supply of bags and packing materials to prevent delays and support peak-time efficiency.
  • Assist with basic price checks, item lookups, or small customer requests at the register when trained and authorized to do so.
  • Adhere to all store policies and loss-prevention procedures, including checking for suspicious packaging, reporting potential theft, and following bag limit or receipt-check policies when required.
  • Communicate clearly and positively with customers about special handling needs (e.g., cold items, fragile glassware) and accommodate reasonable requests to improve satisfaction.
  • Support curbside pickup or grocery delivery workflows by quickly and accurately loading bags for pickup orders, ensuring correct labeling and order completeness.
  • Keep checkout lanes free of hazards by immediately addressing spills, broken glass, or debris and following established cleaning and safety procedures.
  • Rotate and manage bagging supplies, remove damaged or unusable bags, and notify the supervisor when inventory levels are low to prevent supply outages.
  • Participate in regular training on new bagging methods, safety protocols, and customer-service best practices to maintain consistent quality standards.
  • Assist with basic merchandising or restocking of checkout-area impulse items, seasonal displays, and promotional signage to support sales goals.
  • Follow ergonomic and safe lifting practices to minimize injury risk while handling heavy boxes, beverage cases, and large grocery bags.
  • Provide simple product information (location, brand differences) and direct customers to appropriate departments when applicable, escalating questions to supervisors when needed.
  • Document and report customer complaints, damaged product incidents, or unusual occurrences to the supervising cashier or manager for resolution and recordkeeping.
  • Support store opening and closing procedures at the front end, including restocking bags, sanitizing counters, and preparing the lane for the next shift.
  • Participate in store safety drills and comply with emergency response procedures to ensure the safety of customers and team members.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by proactively offering help to colleagues during rush periods and communicating lane status to the floor manager.
  • Accurately follow any state or company-specific regulations related to bagging fees, single-use bag policies, and customer opt-out programs, helping to educate customers as needed.
  • Assist with inventory counts of front-end supplies and help reconcile discrepancies under the direction of supervising staff.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor consistent with company dress code and customer-service expectations while on duty.

  • Assist with curbside or online order assembly during peak times by organizing items by order, verifying accuracy, and preparing bags for pickup or delivery.
