Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Maintain continuous readiness of the bar by stocking beer, wine, liquor, mixers, garnishes and paper goods in advance of and during service periods to prevent any downtime for bartenders.
  • Clear, rinse and organize glassware at pace during peak shifts to ensure bartenders always have clean glasses available and to reduce wait time for guests.
  • Replenish ice stations, maintain ice bins and manage ice usage efficiently to support drink service and prevent shortages.
  • Remove and dispose of trash and recyclables from behind the bar, floor and service areas frequently during service to keep the work environment safe and sanitary.
  • Restock and rotate kegs, bottles and canned beverages, following FIFO practices to maintain freshness and proper inventory control.
  • Set up and break down the bar for each shift, including stocking condiments, napkins, straws, garnishes, and cleaning stations to maintain consistent service standards.
  • Sweep, mop and deep-clean bar floors and under-stations during and after shifts to meet health code and venue cleanliness requirements.
  • Monitor and report low inventory levels of spirits, wine, beer, mixers, and bar supplies to the bartender or manager, and assist with receiving and storing deliveries.
  • Assist bartenders with simple drink assembly or pre-batched items (when permitted by venue policy), ensuring accuracy and quality under supervision.
  • Handle controlled substances (alcohol) responsibly by checking IDs when asked, communicating intoxication concerns, and following house policies for safe service.
  • Maintain bar tools and equipment, including speed rails, sinks, ice machines and POS stations; report any maintenance or malfunction issues immediately.
  • Coordinate with kitchen staff and servers to ensure timely beverage service for food pairings, large parties, and special events.
  • Support opening and closing procedures including inventory counts, locking and securing stock rooms and documenting any discrepancies.
  • Rapidly respond to bartender requests during high-volume periods (glassware, bottles, garnishes, towels) to sustain a fast and organized workflow.
  • Enforce and assist with venue health and safety protocols including slip prevention, proper chemical storage, and sanitation procedures for spills and breakages.
  • Maintain accurate and clean service stations including back bars, speed rails, and drink preparation areas to enable efficient bartending.
  • Assist with cashout procedures at shift end by supporting bartenders and managers with simple counts and reconciling beverage inventories as required.
  • Help prepare for large promotions, private events and bottle service nights through logistics support such as staging bottles, ice, mixers, and glassware.
  • Engage with staff in handoffs and shift notes to communicate inventory issues, service incidents, or equipment problems to the incoming team.
  • Operate point-of-sale terminals for simple tasks when authorized, such as ringing in bottles or stock adjustments, while ensuring data accuracy.
  • Follow all local, state and venue-specific laws and policies regarding the service of alcohol, including refusal of service to intoxicated persons.
  • Assist in loss prevention by monitoring for theft, tampering and inventory shrinkage; report suspicious behavior to management promptly.
  • Maintain personal presentation and adhere to uniform and grooming standards, representing the venue professionally at all times.

Secondary Functions

  • Support bartenders with occasional prep work (juicing citrus, batching syrups) under direct supervision to speed service during peak hours.
  • Help coordinate small inventory audits and assist managers with cycle counts to keep stock records current.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions focused on service improvements, safety protocols and product knowledge.
  • Provide basic customer support when floor staff are occupied (answering simple guest questions or locating managers) while maintaining primary bar duties.
  • Assist with charitable or promotional events by setting up beverage stations and helping with crowd flow under manager direction.
  • Offer input on stock ordering needs based on day-to-day observations of consumption patterns and guest preferences.
  • Provide emergency assistance during incidents (e.g., broken glass, spills) to quickly restore a safe work environment.
  • Support sustainable practices at the bar by sorting recyclables, minimizing waste and suggesting improvements to reduce supply usage.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Knowledge of basic bar operations including glassware handling, ice management, keg rotation and bottle restocking.
  • Familiarity with local alcohol service laws and ID checking procedures to help prevent underage or over-service.
  • Basic POS operation experience for processing simple transactions and assisting bartenders/managers with inventory inputs.
  • Safe lifting and ergonomics to handle kegs, crates and heavy stock repeatedly during high-volume shifts.
  • Understanding of food safety and sanitation standards (cleaning chemicals, wash cycles for glassware, sanitizer use).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not always required; focus on demonstrated hospitality experience and reliability.

Preferred Education:

  • Hospitality, culinary or customer service certificate or completion of a bartending/food safety course (e.g., ServSafe).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
