Primary Functions

  • Perform consistently compelling and stylistically authentic bass parts for live shows, rehearsals, festivals and touring engagements, maintaining impeccable time feel, pocket and dynamic control to support the ensemble and the song arrangement.
  • Prepare for live gigs by learning setlists rapidly and accurately, creating parts from recordings or charts, practicing required grooves, fills and transitions, and ensuring readiness for spontaneous arrangement changes during performance.
  • Record high-quality bass tracks in professional and home studio environments, including DI and amp tracking, double-tracking, appropriate use of pedals and effects, and collaborating with producers and engineers to achieve the desired tone and musical intent.
  • Create, adapt and arrange basslines for new songs and covers, offering musical solutions that serve the song—whether a minimal pocket, a melodic hook, a walking bass, or an energetic slap section—while clearly communicating ideas with arrangers and producers.
  • Sight-read charts, lead sheets and condensed scores for rehearsals, studio sessions and pit orchestra situations, delivering accurate pitch, rhythm and style without extensive prior rehearsal when required.
  • Transcribe existing recordings into readable notation or tab and prepare concise, performance-ready charts for the band, including suggested tempos, feel annotations, and alternate part options for key changes or dynamic shifts.
  • Lock in with the drummer and rhythm section during rehearsals and live performances, developing and maintaining a consistent tempo and dynamic relationship using eye contact, non-verbal cues and rhythmic alignment.
  • Deliver consistent tone and intonation across instruments and settings—electric bass, fretless, and upright—by managing setup, string choices, action, intonation, and EQ/amp settings appropriate to the venue or session.
  • Operate and maintain professional stage and studio gear, including bass amps, DI boxes, effects pedals, wireless systems, direct inputs, and in-ear monitors, conducting soundchecks and troubleshooting signal chain issues under time pressure.
  • Adapt parts on-the-fly in rehearsals and performances when arrangements change, seamlessly transposing, simplifying or adding movement to basslines while preserving musical integrity and ensemble balance.
  • Provide tasteful fills, transitions and tag endings that enhance songs without overpowering vocals or other instruments, applying knowledge of harmony and form to support arrangements musically and structurally.

  • Document and organize accurate, up-to-date charts, tabs and session notes for every gig and recording session, enabling quick recall, efficient handoffs to substitute players and consistent performance standards across tours.
  • Manage personal scheduling, travel logistics and gear lists for touring and session work, coordinating with tour managers and production staff to meet load-in, setup and soundcheck timelines reliably.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with booking agents, producers, venue staff and other musicians through timely communication, strong etiquette, prompt follow-through on commitments and positive on-site behavior.
  • Participate in remote and in-person auditions and callbacks, preparing demo reels, live recordings and concise performance samples that showcase stylistic range, tone control and reading ability.
  • Support promotional activities when required—photos, interviews, social media clips, livestream performances and contributor credits—representing the band or project professionally and contributing to audience growth.
  • Maintain instrument and equipment inventory, organize transport cases and backups, coordinate repairs and regular maintenance, and ensure appropriate insurance and documentation for high-value instruments during travel.
  • Contribute to creative development sessions, co-writing bass parts or full arrangements, offering constructive ideas for production, sonic texture and harmonic movement that enhance songcraft for recordings or live sets.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, session rates, union rules (where applicable), and licensing requirements for session work and sync license coordination, raising contract questions with management as needed.
