Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute daily batch production runs by precisely weighing, metering, and feeding raw materials according to written formulas, recipes and work instructions, ensuring accurate ingredient ratios and target yields for each lot.
  • Set up and operate industrial mixers, blenders, or kneaders (vertical, ribbon, high-shear, planetary, or other specified equipment), including selection of mixing speeds, cycle times and sequencing to achieve required product consistency and quality.
  • Read, interpret and follow batch tickets, material safety data sheets (MSDS), SOPs and control diagrams; confirm correct lot codes, material certifications and expiration dates prior to use.
  • Perform in-process monitoring and quality checks such as viscosity, pH, temperature, weight checks, visual inspection and sampling; record measurements and immediately notify QA/lead of out-of-specification results.
  • Operate PLC/HMI controls to set and monitor process parameters, log alarms, and record cycle data; escalate unresolved control issues to automation or maintenance teams.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate batch records, production logs, and lot traceability documentation for each run to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance (GMP/HACCP/FDA as applicable).
  • Conduct pre- and post-run equipment inspections, tighten and secure mixing assemblies, replace gaskets and seals, and verify guards and safety interlocks are in place before starting.
  • Execute clean-in-place (CIP) and sanitation protocols for mixers, tanks and associated piping between batches and during changeovers, following validated cleaning procedures and documenting completion.
  • Complete product changeovers and line setups efficiently while minimizing downtime; perform trial or purge runs as required to prevent cross-contamination between formulations.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance or cleaning, coordinate with maintenance for troubleshooting mechanical, electrical or pneumatic issues, and assist with basic repairs when qualified.
  • Manage raw material staging and feed systems to ensure continuous production flow, verify correct feeders and pumps are calibrated, and adjust feed rates to maintain batch targets.
  • Verify packaging and intermediate transfer procedures post-mix (transfer to holding tanks, filling, bagging) to ensure product integrity and correct fill weights prior to downstream processing.
  • Collect and label samples for internal QA and third-party testing per sampling plans; deliver samples to the lab with complete documentation and follow up on test results.
  • Monitor and log critical temperatures, pressures and process variables during mixing cycles to ensure product safety, stability and shelf-life targets are met.
  • Apply basic process improvement and root cause analysis techniques (5 Whys, CAPA participation) to reduce rejects, improve yield and eliminate recurring mixing issues.
  • Train and mentor junior operators on best practices, safe operation of mixers, documentation standards and GMP compliance to raise team capability and consistency.
  • Enforce company safety policies by identifying hazards, reporting near misses and participating in safety meetings, risk assessments and compliance audits.
  • Coordinate with inventory and warehouse teams on material shortages, returns, and quarantine procedures; update inventory systems or MRP (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) when relevant.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization and 5S standards in the mixing area, including proper storage of raw materials, tools and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure compliance with allergen control programs, FIFO/FEFO stock rotation, and contaminant prevention procedures during ingredient handling and mixing.
  • Follow environmental and waste disposal procedures for spills, rejected product and chemical cleaning solutions; document waste streams when required.
  • Support first-line troubleshooting of mechanical/pneumatic systems (belts, seals, agitators, valves) and report trends to maintenance to avoid unplanned downtime.
  • Validate and verify scale and instrument calibrations used in batching operations and coordinate calibration schedules with metrology or QA teams.
  • Participate in production planning meetings to provide realistic cycle times, setup durations and material needs for upcoming runs; escalate capacity or material constraints early.
  • Maintain professional communication with supervisors, maintenance, QA and production planners; provide precise status updates and handovers at shift change.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory counts, material reconciliation and documentation updates in MRP/WMS as requested by planning or inventory control.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and small kaizen projects aimed at reducing cycle time, lowering waste, and improving product consistency.
  • Participate in internal and external audits by preparing batch records, SOPs and equipment maintenance logs for review.
  • Help coordinate contractor or vendor access for preventive maintenance and equipment service; ensure appropriate permits and LOTO procedures are followed.
  • Provide back-up coverage for related production tasks (weighing, packaging line support, sampling) during peak periods or staffing shortages.
  • Support data collection for process metrics and produce simple shift reports summarizing production, quality and downtime events.
  • Attend training on new formulations, equipment upgrades or safety programs and apply learnings to daily operations.
  • Assist QA with corrective actions by providing detailed process context and historical batch data when investigating quality incidents.
  • Maintain and update local SOP checklists and visual work instructions to reflect current best practices and reduce operator variability.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Operation of industrial mixing equipment (e.g., ribbon blenders, planetary mixers, high-shear mixers, ribbon blenders) with demonstrated ability to set speeds, times and sequences.
  • PLC/HMI interaction and basic troubleshooting of automated control systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of GMP, HACCP, food safety protocols, allergen control and OSHA safety standards applicable to mixing and batching operations.

  • Experience with sampling, in-process QC checks (pH, viscosity, solids content, moisture), and documentation required for QA review.
  • Inventory and lot traceability practices, experience using ERP/MRP/WMS systems (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Blue Yonder) to record production and material usage.
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space awareness and other safety certification experience as required by the site.
  • Knowledge of environmental and waste handling regulations for industrial cleaning fluids and rejected product streams.
  • Basic computer literacy: Microsoft Office (Excel for logs and simple reporting), digital logbooks, and data entry accuracy.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Technology, Food Science, Chemical Technology, or a related technical discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Demonstrated experience with GMP/HACCP, CIP validation, PLC-operated equipment, and ERP systems.
  • Previous supervisory, lead-operator, or cross-functional experience is a plus.
