Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide safe, respectful, and dignity-preserving assisted bathing and personal hygiene services (tub, shower, bed baths) to residents, patients, or guests according to individualized care plans and facility protocols.
  • Evaluate and follow individualized bathing plans, including precautions for skin integrity, pressure areas, wounds, and lines/tubes, and escalate concerns to nursing staff immediately when changes in skin condition or overall health are observed.
  • Assist with transfers, ambulation, and positioning using proper body mechanics, mechanical lifts, gait belts or other mobility aids to minimize risk of falls and injury to both the client and staff.
  • Conduct pre-bath safety checks (water temperature, slip-resistant mats, shower chairs, proper lighting) and prepare bathing area to meet infection control and safety standards before beginning care.
  • Maintain detailed and timely documentation of bathing activities, skin observations, refusals of care, time spent, and any incidents or irregularities in the electronic health record (EHR) or facility log as required.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing, therapeutic, and housekeeping teams regarding resident needs, scheduling, special equipment requirements, and changes in condition related to bathing and hygiene.
  • Provide respectful assistance with toileting, oral care, hair care, shaving, nail care, and toileting hygiene while ensuring privacy and respecting cultural or personal preferences.
  • Identify, report and follow up on potential skin breakdown, wounds, rashes, unusual odors, or other dermatological issues; collaborate with nurses or wound care specialists for follow-up documentation and care.
  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention protocols including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper linen handling, and cleaning/disinfection of bathing equipment between uses.
  • Maintain resident or guest dignity by following toileting and bathing preferences, using towels and gowns for coverage, and offering choices of products and temperatures whenever possible.
  • Monitor and document intake/output related to bathing procedures when required (e.g., observed incontinent episodes during bath time) and report deviations from baseline to the clinical team.
  • Support mobility and rehabilitation goals by following therapist-provided instructions during bathing and transfers to encourage independence, safe participation, and range-of-motion activities as appropriate.
  • Respond calmly and promptly to residents who are anxious, resistive, or confused during bathing; use de-escalation techniques, distraction, and gentle guidance to ensure safety and cooperation.
  • Perform skin inspections for pressure injuries, moisture-associated skin damage (MASD), and areas requiring protective creams or moisture barriers, and apply topical products per care plan or after nurse direction.
  • Maintain a schedule of regular bathing services in coordination with the unit team, ensuring equitable distribution of workloads and timely completion of assigned tasks each shift.
  • Ensure proper stocking and disposal of bathing supplies, disposable liners, single-use razors, skincare products and PPE; report low inventory to supervisors to avoid interruptions in care.
  • Follow facility policies for susceptible populations (e.g., dementia, bariatric, infectious isolation) including modified bathing approaches, two-person assist procedures, and additional safety measures.
  • Assist in training or orienting new bath attendants or nursing assistants in safe bathing techniques, documentation standards, and facility-specific bathing protocols when assigned as a mentor or preceptor.
  • Participate in safety huddles and communicate any trends or recurring barriers to safe bathing (equipment faults, scheduling conflicts, resident refusals) so process improvements can be made.
  • Ensure bathing areas, tubs, and showers are clean, sanitized, and hazard-free after each use; coordinate with housekeeping for deep-clean or maintenance issues beyond routine sanitization.
  • Provide compassionate end-of-life hygiene care for residents with comfort-focused needs, coordinating with nursing to tailor bathing practices to palliative goals.

Secondary Functions

  • Restock bathing carts, supply closets and linen rooms; rotate stock using first-in/first-out (FIFO) to ensure product freshness and compliance with supply standards.
  • Assist with light housekeeping in bathing areas and resident rooms after bathing—towel disposal, toiletry organization, and surface wiping following infection control guidance.
  • Support transportation of residents to and from bathing areas for larger units or offsite spa services, coordinating with scheduling staff to minimize wait times.
  • Participate in in-service trainings, competency assessments, and continuing education related to safe lifting, infection control, dementia care, skin integrity, and privacy practices.
  • Help gather and prepare special bathing supplies for residents with clinical needs (e.g., medicated shampoos, barrier creams, dressing changes) in coordination with licensed staff.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
