Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate, monitor and control conveyor belts, feeders and transfer points to maintain continuous product flow and meet scheduled production targets while minimizing downtime and product damage.
- Perform pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections, checking belt tension, alignment, rollers, guards and sensors; document findings and initiate corrective actions or maintenance requests according to SOPs.
- Execute belt changeovers, line startups and shutdowns safely and efficiently, following standardized changeover checklists to ensure product integrity and minimize line stoppages.
- Troubleshoot common mechanical and electrical issues (misalignment, belt tracking, motor stalls, jam clearance) and perform first-line fixes using hand tools; escalate complex faults to maintenance with accurate fault descriptions.
- Apply Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, machine guarding and site-specific safety protocols before servicing equipment to protect personnel and comply with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Monitor production quality at belt transfer points, performing in-line sampling, rejecting nonconforming product, and coordinating with Quality Assurance to document defects and corrective actions.
- Load and unload raw materials, packaging components and finished goods at conveyor infeed or outfeed stations while following safe material handling practices and weight limits.
- Record production data such as line speed, uptime/downtime, product counts, rejects and changeover times in the MES/ERP or paper log to support OEE tracking and operational reporting.
- Coordinate with upstream and downstream operators, maintenance and supervisors to manage bottlenecks, prioritize repairs and maintain balanced line flow for optimal throughput.
- Execute routine preventive maintenance tasks (cleaning, lubrication, roller replacement, belt tension adjustments) according to PM schedules and maintain maintenance logs.
- Support packaging and labeling operations by ensuring correct orientation, spacing and spacing sensors settings on conveyors; perform minor adjustments to maintain packaging quality.
- Conduct sanitary cleaning and sanitation tasks on belts and surrounding areas when required by production schedules, adhering to GMP/HACCP or USDA/FDA guidelines for food environments.
- Follow allergen control and segregation procedures at product changeovers to prevent cross-contamination; thoroughly document and report any deviations.
- Maintain awareness of safety and environmental hazards such as pinch points, nip points, loose clothing and spill zones; proactively remove risks and report near-misses and incidents.
- Participate in daily team huddles and shift handovers to communicate status of conveyors, ongoing repairs, inventory needs and safety concerns to ensure continuity between shifts.
- Train new operators on conveyor operation, safety procedures, basic troubleshooting and company SOPs; serve as an experienced resource on best practices and housekeeping.
- Use basic PLC interfaces, HMI screens and alarm logs to acknowledge and log faults, adjust simple parameters (line speed, photoeye sensitivity) and coordinate with electricians/maintenance for software issues.
- Implement continuous improvement suggestions by identifying recurring failure modes, proposing countermeasures to reduce downtime and participating in root cause analysis sessions.
- Manage waste, trim and product overflows at belt areas to reduce contamination and product loss, and follow proper disposal procedures for scrap materials.
- Ensure correct use of PPE and enforce team compliance; participate in safety audits and corrective action follow-through to maintain a safe workplace.
- Verify and maintain inventory of belt spares, tooling and cleaning supplies at the line; request replenishment to minimize lost time waiting for critical parts.
- Assist quality and production teams during audits by providing documentation, performing sample pulls and demonstrating adherence to sanitation and control plans.
- Execute emergency stops and evacuation procedures when required; assist in incident investigations by providing accurate sequence-of-events information from the line perspective.
- Track and communicate KPI performance metrics (uptime, rejects, throughput) to the shift lead and recommend operational adjustments to meet targets.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc inventory counts for spares and consumables, and update stock levels in the maintenance or inventory system.
- Assist maintenance technicians during planned outages and preventive maintenance tasks by providing access, holding parts, and relaying operational context.
- Participate in cross-functional improvement projects such as 5S, Kaizen events or waste reduction initiatives to improve line safety and efficiency.
- Help prepare production reports, transfer logs and shift handover documentation to streamline communication and decision making across shifts.
- Collect routine production samples and deliver them to Quality Assurance, ensuring chain-of-custody and correct labeling per SOPs.
- Conduct basic housekeeping and area clean-up to maintain clear access to emergency exits, safety equipment and belt areas.
- Support training rollouts for new procedures or equipment upgrades by providing feedback on procedures and demonstrating practical steps to operators.
- Assist in seasonal or campaign-based line changeovers, including minor tooling swaps, conveyor extensions and temporary guard installations.
