Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare, label, track and process biological, chemical, or environmental samples according to established SOPs, ensuring chain-of-custody, correct aliquoting, and appropriate storage conditions (cold chain, -80°C, LN2 as required).
  • Perform routine and specialized bench assays such as PCR/qPCR, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, HPLC/GC sample prep, and microbiological culture work, consistently meeting quality and throughput targets.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform first-line troubleshooting and calibration on laboratory instruments (centrifuges, pipettes, balances, incubators, autoclaves, HPLCs, spectrometers), documenting maintenance and calibration events in logs or LIMS.
  • Execute reagent and buffer preparation, sterile-media formulation, serial dilutions, and master mix assembly with precise volumetric technique and documented calculations to support reproducible assays.
  • Adhere to GLP/GMP/ISO standards and internal quality systems by following SOPs, completing required training, and participating in corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) when deviations occur.
  • Enter experimental data, instrument outputs, and QC results into LIMS and electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) accurately and promptly, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and appropriate metadata capture.
  • Conduct routine quality control checks on assays and instrumentation, analyze control charts, flag out-of-specification results, and escalate to supervisory staff when warranted.
  • Prepare consumables, maintain adequate inventory levels, place purchase requisitions, and manage reagent expiry/rotation to minimize disruption to lab operations.
  • Assist with method validation and verification activities by executing predefined protocols, documenting results, and contributing observations that support method robustness and repeatability.
  • Maintain a clean and safe bench environment by following biosafety, chemical hygiene, and hazardous waste procedures, including proper PPE use and spill response.
  • Participate in sample accessioning, barcoding, and storage organization for high-throughput workflows to ensure quick retrieval and accurate sample lineage.
  • Execute routine cleaning, sterilization, and autoclave cycles for glassware and equipment, validating sterilization parameters and documenting outcomes per facility requirements.
  • Support preparation of materials for cross-functional teams (analytical, formulation, process development), including homogenizing samples, aliquoting standards, and preparing calibration curves.
  • Troubleshoot assay failures and instrument issues by performing root-cause checks, repeating runs as needed, and documenting corrective steps taken for continuous improvement.
  • Follow chain-of-custody and specimen handling protocols for clinical or regulated samples, ensuring patient privacy and regulatory compliance where applicable.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new technicians and student interns on bench techniques, lab safety, and SOP adherence to build bench competence across the team.
  • Compile and prepare routine lab reports, batch records, and QC summaries for review by supervisors, ensuring clarity, completeness, and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Support small-scale sample shipments by preparing packaging, completing documentation (MSDS, permits), and coordinating with logistics according to hazardous material regulations.
  • Monitor environmental controls (temperature logs, CO2 incubators, cold rooms), perform preventive checks, and escalate anomalies to facilities or lab management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by recommending workflow optimizations, time-saving techniques, and waste reduction measures grounded in bench experience.
  • Execute periodic proficiency testing and internal audits to verify compliance with lab quality systems and participate in external audits as required.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide ad-hoc technical support to scientists and senior staff for protocol transfer, replicate setups, and pilot-scale experiments.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects to support scale-up, process transfer, or product transfer activities by providing bench-level feasibility data and hands-on execution.
  • Help maintain and update SOPs, reagent recipes, and bench job aids based on observed best practices and recent method refinements.
  • Assist with basic statistical summaries and visualizations of QC data to help identify trends and inform troubleshooting or process improvement.
  • Coordinate with supply chain and procurement to expedite hard-to-get consumables and critical reagents during time-sensitive projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Precise micropipetting and volumetric technique, including multi-channel pipettes and repeat pipettors.
  • Hands-on experience with PCR/qPCR workflows, thermal cyclers, and downstream analysis.
  • Familiarity with HPLC/GC sample preparation, operation basics, and routine housekeeping tasks on analytical instruments.
  • Proficiency in spectrophotometry, fluorometry, and basic optical instrument operation (UV/Vis).
  • Experience with centrifugation, filtration, autoclaving, sterile technique, and aseptic handling.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with relevant lab certificate (e.g., phlebotomy, clinical lab technician), or Associate degree in laboratory science, biotechnology, or related technical field.

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, or related life-science discipline.
