  • Maintenance Technician (Mechanical)
  • Prepress or Digital Print Specialist

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, align, and calibrate bindery equipment (saddle stitchers, perfect binders, case makers, folder-gluers, cutters/guillotines, creasers, and trimmers) according to job specifications and production schedules to ensure consistent, on-spec output.
  • Load and feed paper, signatures, covers, and other materials into bindery machines, monitor material flow, and adjust settings to maintain continuous production while minimizing waste.
  • Perform in-process quality inspections including measuring spine square, glue coverage, stitch placement, trim accuracy, and overall appearance; make real-time adjustments to ensure finished product meets customer specifications and QA standards.
  • Execute precise cut and trim operations using guillotines/trimmers: verify dimensions, set guides, perform test cuts, and document final trim tolerances to meet layout and bleed requirements.
  • Operate and program digital and mechanical binding equipment (e.g., perfect binders, PUR systems, hot melt glue systems) to achieve proper adhesive application, curing, and spine strength for various paper stocks.
  • Conduct saddle stitching set-up, including fold settings, stitch placement, and stitch clinching adjustments; inspect signatures for alignment, jump, and flow prior to finishing.
  • Run case binding (hardcover) operations: prepare boards, round and back signatures, apply endpapers, cement spines, and perform casing-in with consistent register and square.
  • Manage folding and scoring machines: select appropriate scoring tools, set fold sequences, troubleshoot fold-over, and verify fold accuracy for brochures, newsletters, and inserts.
  • Operate and maintain collating systems and jogging equipment to assemble signatures in correct order, detect misfeeds, and ensure complete sets for binding.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues at the machine level (belts, sensors, motors, pneumatic components) to restore production quickly; escalate complex repairs to maintenance while documenting recurring faults.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks — cleaning, lubrication, tension adjustments, blade sharpening/replacement — and complete maintenance logs in accordance with manufacturer and company schedules.
  • Monitor glue systems, adhesive types, and feeder temperatures; switch adhesives and set temperature profiles for different substrates and binding methods to avoid delamination or poor adhesion.
  • Maintain accurate job tickets, production logs, and quality control records including scrap counts, run speeds, downtime reasons, and corrective actions for each production run.
  • Coordinate with prepress, press operators, and production planning to verify imposition, proof approvals, and color/sequence accuracy before bindery operations begin.
  • Adhere to safety protocols: lockout/tagout during maintenance, safe material handling, proper blade and pressroom PPE usage, and emergency procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Optimize machine run parameters and workflow to reduce make-ready time, minimize waste, and increase throughput while maintaining product quality and customer specifications.
  • Perform final finishing operations such as numbering, laminating, die-cutting, embossing, foil stamping, and shrink-wrapping as required by job specs, ensuring proper setup and finish quality.
  • Inspect and repair minor product defects such as loose signatures, poor glue lines, or mis-trims; remove and rework defective units using approved rework procedures.
  • Train and mentor junior bindery staff and temporary operators on machine setup, safe operation, quality checks, and company finishing standards.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for recurring quality or downtime issues; propose and implement process improvements or tooling changes to eliminate defects and improve yield.
  • Manage inventory of consumables and spare parts for bindery machines (blades, adhesive, staples, guarding components); request replenishment to prevent production interruptions.
  • Maintain clean and organized bindery work areas consistent with 5S and housekeeping standards; ensure tools and gauges are stored and calibrated properly.
  • Support rapid changeovers between jobs by preparing preflight checklists, staging materials, and documenting preferred machine settings for repeatability.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors and cross-functional teams about production status, potential delays, quality concerns, and resource needs to meet customer delivery dates.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in updating standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and machine set-up guides to capture best practices and reduce training time for new hires.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Kaizen) to identify bottlenecks in bindery workflows and implement incremental process improvements.
  • Help coordinate preventive maintenance and scheduled downtime with the maintenance team to minimize impact on production throughput.
  • Support inventory audits and cycle counts of bindery consumables and finished goods storage when requested.
  • Provide input on equipment purchases, tooling needs, and upgrades based on hands-on experience with job variety and machine performance.
  • Contribute to safety inspections and risk assessments for the bindery floor; follow up on corrective actions and safety training reminders.
  • Assist customer service or sales teams with technical questions regarding finishing capabilities, estimated lead times, and typical production constraints.
  • Participate in cross-training initiatives to increase workforce flexibility across bindery and finishing operations.
  • Maintain digital records of job settings and photos for quick reference during repeat orders and to accelerate changeover accuracy.
  • Support ad-hoc quality investigations by supplying production data, sample defects, and machine history to quality engineers.
