Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and plan reproducible experiments that address research questions, product development milestones, or regulatory requirements; prepare experimental timelines and resource plans to meet project goals.
  • Execute complex laboratory procedures including PCR/qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, cloning, gel electrophoresis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation with meticulous attention to SOPs and sample tracking.
  • Perform sterile cell culture, maintenance and differentiation of cell lines and primary cells, including mycoplasma testing, cryopreservation, and viability assays to support cellular biology projects.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate biochemical and cellular assays (ELISA, Western blot, enzymatic assays, reporter assays) and document assay performance metrics (sensitivity, specificity, LOD, linearity).
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instrumentation such as fluorescence and confocal microscopes, plate readers, flow cytometers, real-time PCR instruments, and automated liquid handlers; coordinate preventative maintenance and calibration.
  • Analyze experimental data using statistical tools and scientific software (R, Python, GraphPad Prism), interpret results, and perform secondary analyses such as dose–response modeling or kinetics interpretation.
  • Prepare clear, well-documented laboratory notebooks, SOPs, reagent logs, and electronic records compliant with GLP/GMP/ISO guidelines to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
  • Troubleshoot experimental failures and technical issues proactively; investigate root causes, implement corrective actions, and revise protocols to improve robustness and throughput.
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional project teams, working with bioinformatics, engineering, manufacturing, clinical, and regulatory colleagues to translate biological findings into product decisions.
  • Mentor and train junior staff, interns, and technicians in laboratory best practices, safety procedures, and experimental techniques to build team capability and maintain high quality standards.
  • Manage sample handling, chain-of-custody, and storage logistics for clinical or field samples; ensure appropriate biospecimen accessioning, labeling, and disposition.
  • Prepare technical reports, experimental summaries, and datasheets for internal stakeholders and external partners; contribute to scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and regulatory submissions.
  • Implement and maintain laboratory safety policies, perform risk assessments for biological hazards, and ensure proper waste disposal and PPE compliance for the team.
  • Coordinate reagent and consumable inventory, place purchase orders, evaluate vendor performance, and validate critical reagents and kits.
  • Design and execute field sampling protocols (where applicable) including species identification, environmental sampling, and sample preservation for downstream lab analysis.
  • Support assay transfer and scale-up activities for manufacturing or clinical trial use, providing technical documentation and training for receiving sites.
  • Participate in experimental design reviews and statistical planning to ensure sufficient power, appropriate controls, and compliance with ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain awareness of current literature, emerging technologies (CRISPR, single-cell sequencing, proteomics), and industry trends; propose and pilot new methods to accelerate research.
  • Engage with external collaborators, CROs, and academic partners; manage collaborations deliverables, timelines, and data sharing agreements.
  • Ensure data integrity and reproducibility by implementing version control for code and protocols, validating analytical pipelines, and archiving raw and processed data following data governance policies.
  • Prepare regulatory-compliant documentation for product dossiers or environmental impact assessments and support audits, inspections, or internal quality reviews.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional data requests by preparing summarized datasets, figures, and technical briefings for program managers and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to departmental strategy by identifying technology gaps, recommending equipment purchases, and participating in budget planning.
