🎯 Role Definition

A Blending Operator is responsible for executing, monitoring, and documenting batch blending and mixing processes to produce consistent, high-quality product formulations. This hands-on production role ensures accurate weighing and dosing of raw materials, operates blending and mixing equipment (including PLC/SCADA interfaces), follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and enforces safety and quality standards (GMP/cGMP, HACCP, OSHA). The Blending Operator actively troubleshoots routine process issues, performs preventative maintenance tasks, and collaborates with QC, inventory, and production planning teams to meet batch release and throughput targets.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely prepare, measure, weigh, and dose raw materials according to batch records and formulation specifications; perform high-accuracy weighing procedures using calibrated scales and document weights in batch documentation and electronic systems.
  • Operate blending and mixing equipment (e.g., ribbon blenders, tumble blenders, high-shear mixers, agitators) and associated PLC/HMI or SCADA systems to execute batch programs, set process parameters, and monitor real-time process data for temperature, torque, RPM, and batch time.
  • Execute and strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), batch records, and work instructions to maintain process consistency, regulatory compliance, and traceability for each production lot.
  • Conduct in-process quality checks (visual inspection, sample pulls, pH, viscosity, particle size verification as applicable), document results, and work with Quality Control to address out-of-specification events or deviations.
  • Review production orders and batch schedules, prepare staging of raw materials, ensure correct raw material identification and labeling, and verify Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and allergen/contamination controls before use.
  • Perform clean-in-place (CIP) and sanitation procedures on blending equipment between batches, maintain sanitary conditions, and document cleaning activities to meet food, pharmaceutical, or cosmetic GMP requirements.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and paper batch documentation, complete production logs, and ensure timely handoff to Quality for sample disposition and final release.
  • Troubleshoot routine mechanical and process issues (leaks, jammed feeders, inconsistent feed rates, motor/drive faults) and execute corrective actions or escalate to maintenance with clear fault descriptions.
  • Carry out routine preventative maintenance checks (lubrication, seals, belts, sensors, calibration checks) and report abnormal equipment conditions to maintenance and supervision.
  • Follow inventory control procedures: record raw material usage, return and label drums or totes, assist in cycle counts, and communicate potential material shortages or quality holds to planning and procurement teams.
  • Enforce safety practices by wearing required PPE, following lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for equipment servicing, participating in safety audits, and immediately reporting near misses or incidents.
  • Set up and verify dosing feeders, pumps, metering devices, and ingredient conveyors; calibrate or validate dispensing equipment before critical batches and confirm dosing accuracy through test runs.
  • Participate in batch changeovers, including drain/flushing procedures and product identity verification to prevent cross-contamination and ensure allergen controls are followed.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process improvements, waste reduction ideas, and efficiency gains using lean manufacturing principles and 5S practices.
  • Communicate proactively with Production Leads, QC, and Maintenance to prioritize production sequences, expedite urgent orders, and minimize downtime while meeting quality specifications.
  • Execute emergency response actions for spills, equipment failure, or contamination events per site emergency plans and ensure appropriate containment, cleanup, and documentation.
  • Maintain traceability by verifying lot numbers, container seals, and chain-of-custody for incoming/outgoing materials and intermediate products.
  • Train and mentor junior operators on safe and standard blending practices, SOP adherence, correct documentation, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Support product development and scale-up activities by running pilot batches, recording observations, and providing operator feedback for manufacturability improvements.
  • Ensure environmental and regulatory compliance by monitoring waste streams, recording disposal of process by-products, and cooperating with EHS for compliance audits.
  • Monitor and control process variables to maintain batch yields, reduce rework, and ensure consistent product attributes aligned with customer specifications.
  • Execute allergen control and segregation protocols where applicable, including color coding, scheduling, and physical separation of equipment and lines.
  • Verify and handle hazardous materials according to MSDS, site-specific protocols, and regulatory requirements—ensuring safe storage, transfer, and documentation.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
  • Participate in internal audits and supplier quality reviews by providing production records and clarification on processing parameters.
  • Assist in inspection and validation activities during commissioning of new blending equipment or process upgrades.
  • Collect and log process metrics for yield, cycle time, downtime, and scrap to support reporting and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Coordinate with logistics and warehouse teams to prioritize material flow for scheduled and urgent production demands.
  • Provide input to product change control forms when process or formulation changes are proposed.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory for critical blending components and escalate procurement needs to maintenance or purchasing.
