A Boat Sales Consultant is a client-facing marine sales professional responsible for driving new and repeat boat sales by prospecting, educating customers on product features and specifications, conducting on-water demonstrations and sea trials, preparing accurate sales documentation, and closing deals while delivering an exceptional customer experience. This role combines consultative selling, product and industry knowledge (boat models, engines, trailering, marine electronics), finance and insurance coordination, and ongoing post-sale relationship management to meet and exceed dealership sales targets and KPIs.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prospect, qualify, and convert inbound and outbound leads (phone, email, showroom walk-ins, web leads, social media inquiries) into scheduled appointments and closed boat sales while maintaining an accurate lead pipeline in the CRM to meet monthly and quarterly sales targets.
  • Conduct detailed product consultations to educate buyers on hull designs, outboards/inboards, propulsion systems, marine electronics, safety equipment, trailering options, and available factory/marine dealer packages so customers can make informed purchase decisions.
  • Schedule and perform on-water demonstrations and sea trials, safely operating vessels and showcasing performance, handling, and features while ensuring compliance with local maritime regulations and company safety protocols.
  • Prepare and present accurate, professional, and compliant sales proposals and written quotations, including MSRP, dealer-installed options, freight, taxes, registration, trade-in valuations, and estimated monthly payments.
  • Negotiate pricing, trade-in values, and accessory packages to close deals while protecting gross profit margins and following dealership discount and approval policies.
  • Coordinate financing, leasing, insurance, and extended service plans by working directly with lenders, insurance underwriters, and the F&I department to secure approvals and present financing options to customers.
  • Manage all sales paperwork and documentation from initial intent through delivery — including purchase agreements, registration, titling, lien documents, dealer disclosures, temporary permits, and manufacturer warranty paperwork — ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Conduct professional walk-throughs at delivery, demonstrating boat systems, electronics, maintenance intervals, trailer hookup, and safety procedures to ensure the customer understands vessel operation and post-sale responsibilities.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with customers through timely follow-up, service reminders, referral generation, and aftermarket sales (accessories, upgrades, rigging, maintenance packages) to drive lifetime customer value.
  • Maintain a deep and current knowledge of manufacturer model lineups, MSRP and invoice, factory incentives, dealer promotions, competitive offerings, and industry trends to effectively position inventory and answer technical questions.
  • Maintain showroom and lot presentation standards — merchandising boats, staging trailers, rotating new inventory, restocking brochures, and ensuring boats are clean, fueled, and ready for demonstration/testing.
  • Track and report sales activity metrics (appointments, showings, test drives, demo conversions, gross profit, closing ratios) and participate in regular sales meetings and training to continuously improve personal and team performance.
  • Collaborate with parts, service, and detail departments to coordinate pre-delivery inspections (PDI), accessory installs, warranty onboarding, and delivery scheduling to ensure on-time and well-documented customer handovers.
  • Generate local market leads through community outreach, marina relationships, tow-boat partnerships, boat club networking, and attendance at boat shows, demo days, and open-house events to expand the dealership’s visibility and pipeline.
  • Execute targeted digital and social media selling activities — posting inventory, responding to online inquiries, creating short-form video tours, and leveraging CRM marketing tools to nurture leads and increase showroom traffic.
  • Perform trade-in appraisals using online valuation tools and visual/mechanical inspections to document condition, propose fair trade-in offers, and prepare trade vehicles for resale or wholesale.
  • Participate in manufacturer training programs, product launches, and certification courses to maintain factory certifications, learn new technologies (e.g., joystick control, electric propulsion, integrated navigation), and become a subject-matter resource for customers and peers.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records, submit daily/weekly reports on showings and conversions, recommend re-marketing strategies for slow-moving units, and assist buyers with special orders and factory allocations when applicable.
  • Handle customer complaints and escalations promptly and professionally, coordinate with service and management to find satisfactory resolutions, and document issues to inform continuous improvement and customer retention efforts.
  • Cross-sell aftermarket products and services, including electronics packages, trailer upgrades, safety gear, winterization, storage solutions, and service contracts to grow accessory revenue and increase total sales per customer.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws related to boat sales, titling, registrations, temporary permits, EPA labeling (if applicable), and any manufacturer or dealer compliance reporting requirements.
  • Mentor and onboard new sales hires by sharing best practices, sales processes, CRM usage tips, and product knowledge to strengthen overall team performance and maintain consistent customer experience standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Support dealership marketing efforts by providing product content, customer testimonials, and inventory feedback for website listings, email campaigns, and social advertising to improve lead quality and conversion rates.
  • Contribute insights to inventory purchasing decisions by reporting customer preferences, option trends, and competitor pricing to management and buying teams.
  • Assist with community events, on-water demo days, club sponsorships, and charity regattas to build brand awareness and local customer trust.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven consultative selling skills specific to marine and recreational boats, including new and used boat transactions.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
