Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate and continuously monitor steam and hot-water boilers, maintaining pressures, temperatures, levels and combustion parameters within safe and efficient operating ranges; make real-time adjustments to controls and burners to optimize performance.
- Perform daily pre-start, start-up, shutdown and post-shutdown procedures for boilers and associated equipment, ensuring alignment with written SOPs and lockout/tagout practices.
- Conduct comprehensive visual and instrument inspections of boilers, burners, burners zones, refractory, tubes, economizers and steam traps; identify wear, leaks, corrosion, fouling and other issues and escalate for repair.
- Maintain accurate and timely logbooks and digital records of operating parameters, fuel consumption, blowdown, feedwater characteristics, and maintenance activities to meet company and regulatory recordkeeping requirements.
- Manage and adjust fuel/air ratios and burner settings, perform combustion tuning and draft control to ensure efficient fuel use and minimize emissions; collect and interpret combustion analysis data.
- Monitor and treat boiler water chemistry, conduct blowdown procedures, test and adjust pH, conductivity, and chemical dosing to prevent scaling, corrosion and carryover in accordance with water treatment protocols.
- Troubleshoot mechanical failures and control system anomalies on pumps, valves, burners, economizers, pressure controls, level controls, and gas trains; perform on-the-spot repairs when qualified or coordinate with maintenance staff.
- Execute and document routine preventive maintenance tasks on boilers, feedwater and condensate systems, steam distribution, safety relief valves, and instrumentation to extend equipment life and avoid unplanned outages.
- Perform and document regular safety valve testing, annual shutdown inspections and hydrostatic tests as required by ASME, local codes and company policies; prepare boilers for certified inspections.
- Respond to alarms, emergency shutdowns and abnormal operating conditions 24/7; isolate equipment, enact emergency procedures, and coordinate emergency repairs with maintenance and management.
- Operate and maintain auxiliary systems including fuel oil handling, natural gas trains, burners, pumps, compressors, blowdown tanks, condensate return, deaerators, and feedwater conditioning systems.
- Follow and enforce all safety programs and regulatory requirements including ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, NFPA standards, OSHA, and local boiler licensing requirements; participate in safety audits and hazard assessments.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation and control systems including PLCs, DCS, pressure transmitters, level probes, flame scanners and temperature sensors to ensure reliable operation.
- Maintain cleanliness and order of the boiler room, stacking parts, securing tools and clearing walkways to reduce hazards and comply with housekeeping standards.
- Coordinate scheduled outages and planned maintenance with vendors and contractors, including scoping work, verifying permits, overseeing contractor work, and ensuring proper isolation and testing before returning equipment to service.
- Inspect and maintain steam distribution piping, traps, condensate receivers and heat exchangers; identify steam leaks and coordinate repairs to minimize energy loss and improve system reliability.
- Maintain inventory of critical spares, parts and consumables (gaskets, valves, sensors, fuel nozzles, refractory) and place orders to ensure availability for routine and emergency repairs.
- Support plant energy management initiatives by implementing conservation measures, monitoring boiler efficiency, and reporting on fuel use and opportunities to reduce costs and emissions.
- Prepare regulatory and internal compliance reports (emissions data, fuel usage, boiler logs) and support external inspections by authorities having jurisdiction.
- Train, mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to junior operators, boiler attendants and new hires regarding safe operation, emergency response and correct use of boiler room equipment.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to improve boiler reliability, reduce downtime, and implement predictive maintenance techniques (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis).
- Ensure proper handling and storage of fuels, chemicals and hazardous materials; follow MSDS guidance, maintain spill kits and participate in HAZMAT response drills as required.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
