The Boss Fulfillment Outfitter is a hands-on fulfillment and operations leader responsible for end-to-end order flow, warehouse execution, vendor and carrier coordination, and continuous improvement of fulfillment processes. This role ensures on-time, accurate, and cost-effective delivery of products to customers by managing people, processes, systems (WMS/ERP), and performance metrics across the fulfillment lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Own day-to-day fulfillment operations for assigned distribution centers, including receiving, put-away, inventory control, picking, packing, staging, shipping, and returns, ensuring service-level agreements (SLAs) for order lead times and on-time shipments are consistently met.
  • Manage workforce planning and scheduling to align labor with daily and seasonal order volumes; develop flexible staffing models, overtime strategies, and contingency plans to maintain throughput during peak demand.
  • Implement and maintain picking and packing standards, quality control checkpoints, and visual work instructions to achieve target order accuracy rates and reduce customer returns.
  • Configure, administer, and optimize Warehouse Management System (WMS) workflows and integrations with ERP, OMS, and carrier platforms; partner with IT to troubleshoot transaction failures and drive automation improvements.
  • Monitor and report operational KPIs (orders per hour, lines per hour, order accuracy, case fill rate, dock-to-stock time, on-time shipping rate, inventory shrink) and produce daily/weekly performance dashboards for senior leadership.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives applying Lean principles, Kaizen events, root-cause analysis, and Six Sigma tools to eliminate waste, reduce cycle times, and lower fulfillment cost-per-order.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, safety procedures, and audit-ready documentation; train staff on SOP compliance, quality standards, and correct equipment usage to sustain a safe work environment and OSHA/regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee packaging strategy and materials management to optimize dimensional weight, minimize shipping costs, and reduce breakage—review packaging SKUs and partner with procurement for cost-effective materials.
  • Coordinate inbound carrier relationships and outbound shipping strategies including LTL, parcel, and freight services; negotiate service levels, rates, and pickup schedules to improve reliability and reduce transportation spend.
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and disciplinary processes for fulfillment staff; cultivate a high-performance culture focused on safety, accuracy, and continuous learning.
  • Design and execute inventory reconciliation cycles, cycle count strategies, and discrepancy resolution workflows to maintain high inventory accuracy and support financial close processes.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with merchandising, customer service, procurement, and sales to align inventory availability, promotions, and fulfillment priorities that enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Manage returns processing and refurbishment workflows, implementing triage logic, disposition rules, and resale/refurbish strategies to recover value and minimize return handling costs.
  • Prepare and manage fulfillment budgets, monitor headcount, labor spend, vendor costs, and operational expenditures; recommend capital investments in automation and material handling equipment with ROI analysis.
  • Lead seasonal and promotional fulfillment planning—forecast volumes, build capacity plans, secure temporary labor and equipment, and validate systems and processes ahead of campaign launches.
  • Ensure packaging compliance with carrier requirements, customs and export regulations for international shipments, and labeling standards to avoid carrier fines and customs delays.
  • Supervise equipment maintenance, preventative service schedules, and spare-parts inventory for conveyors, sorters, forklifts, and other material handling assets to prevent downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action plans; report safety metrics and foster continuous improvement in ergonomics and workplace safety.
  • Drive data-driven decision making: extract and analyze fulfillment data, run scenario modeling for slotting and capacity, and recommend improvements supported by measurable business outcomes.
  • Manage vendor and 3PL relationships when outsourcing fulfillment functions—create SOWs, monitor SLA adherence, perform scorecards, and escalate service issues to resolution.
  • Implement and oversee value-added services such as kitting, customization, subscription fulfillment, and specialized packaging to support product differentiation and customer expectations.
  • Champion sustainability initiatives within the fulfillment operation, including packaging reduction, recyclable materials, route optimization, and waste-reduction programs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) administration and configuration (e.g., Manhattan, Oracle WMS, Blue Yonder)
  • Order Management System (OMS) and ERP integrations (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics)
  • Inventory management and cycle count methodologies; SKU slotting and replenishment optimization
  • Experience with parcel and freight carriers (UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL) and freight procurement / rate negotiation
