Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor and control bottling line equipment including fillers, cappers, labelers, conveyors, checkweighers, and palletizers to achieve daily production targets while maintaining product quality and safety.
  • Perform line changeovers and SKU setups, including mechanical adjustments, tooling swaps, HMI/PLC recipe selection, and verification of packaging components to minimize downtime and maintain accurate traceability.
  • Conduct pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections and record findings in production logs, ensuring all critical control points are documented and any abnormalities are escalated to maintenance or supervision.
  • Execute routine preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, belt adjustments, and minor mechanical/electrical repairs to sustain line reliability and maximize OEE.
  • Perform Clean-In-Place (CIP) and sanitation procedures in accordance with SOPs, GMP, and HACCP requirements, verifying cleanliness and ensuring sanitation records are completed accurately.
  • Carry out in-process quality checks — fill level inspections, cap torque checks, label alignment, seal integrity, visual defect detection, and sample testing — and log results to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Use HMI/PLC interfaces to monitor machine performance, change parameters, review alarms, and respond to real-time issues to maintain consistent throughput and reduce waste.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults on bottling equipment, working with maintenance and engineering to diagnose root causes and implement corrective actions quickly.
  • Load raw materials and packaging supplies (bottles, caps, labels, cartons) and ensure proper stock rotation, material verification, and component availability for continuous line operation.
  • Perform start-ups and shutdowns according to established procedures, ensuring safe sequencing, pressure and vacuum checks, and verification of critical safety interlocks.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety protocols when conducting maintenance, repairs, or changeovers to protect personnel and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate production documentation, including batch records, downtime logs, OEE reports, and deviation reports, to support traceability and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to support product recalls, investigations, and non-conformance resolution by providing production data, samples, and observations.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) efforts to eliminate recurring line stoppages, quality escapes, and safety incidents.
  • Train and mentor new operators and temporary staff on safe operation, GMP, SOPs, changeover techniques, and quality expectations to build team capabilities.
  • Operate auxiliary equipment such as palletizers, stretch wrappers, case sealers, and forklifts (where certified) to complete end-of-line packing and staging tasks.
  • Monitor environmental and food safety controls (temperature, humidity, allergen segregation) and follow disposal procedures for out-of-spec product or waste materials.
  • Communicate production status, safety incidents, and quality concerns to shift supervisors and cross-functional teams during handovers and daily meetings.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, 5S, SMED) to reduce cycle times, improve yields, and increase first-pass quality on the bottling line.
  • Ensure correct labeling, lot coding, and barcode/serialization application on packages and verify traceability information is accurate and legible.
  • Adhere to company safety programs, complete required safety training, report near-misses, and actively participate in safety audits and toolbox talks.
  • Assist with cycle counts and inventory verification of critical spares and packaging components, escalating shortages to supply chain or procurement.
  • Implement and follow allergen management and segregation procedures during production of different SKUs to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Respond to customer or regulatory audits by providing documentation, explaining line procedures, and demonstrating compliance with manufacturing controls.

Secondary Functions

  • Support production planning by confirming material staging, line availability and estimated run times for scheduled production orders.
  • Assist maintenance and engineering teams with planned downtime activities, providing operator insight during root-cause troubleshooting and equipment modifications.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to update and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs), operating guides, and training materials based on real-world line experience.
  • Help prepare documentation and samples for quality investigations, shelf-life studies, and R&D pilot runs as needed.
  • Perform basic ERP/SAP data entry for production completion, scrap reporting, and material usage to maintain accurate inventory and production records.
  • Provide input on spare parts stocking levels and suggest critical components to be included in the MRO inventory to reduce future downtime risk.
  • Take part in continuous improvement workshops, contributing ideas to reduce changeover times, decrease waste and raise first-time-through yields.
  • Support contractor/vendor visits by coordinating access, verifying safety compliance, and assisting with equipment orientation during specialized maintenance or upgrades.
  • Assist with end-of-line packing, staging, and load-out during peak demand periods to ensure on-time customer shipments.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards around the line and work area to ensure clear aisles, safe access to equipment, and compliance with 5S and GMP practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in operating high-speed bottling equipment: liquid fillers (gravity, piston, rotary), cappers (press, chuck), labelers, and cartoners.
  • Experience with PLC/HMI systems and ability to navigate recipes, alarms, and basic parameter changes on Allen-Bradley, Siemens or similar controls.
  • Mechanical aptitude: ability to perform basic preventive maintenance, belt and chain adjustments, bearing replacements, and minor troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of sanitation procedures, Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems, and food safety regulations including GMP and HACCP.
  • Competence in conducting in-process quality checks (fill volumes, torque, seal integrity, label placement) and using basic QC tools like scales, calipers, and checkweighers.
  • Familiarity with lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space awareness, and other safety practices required by OSHA or local regulatory bodies.
  • Experience with changeover processes and SMED principles to perform efficient SKU transitions and reduce downtime.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, SOPs, maintenance manuals, and work instructions.
  • Basic computer proficiency (MS Office) and experience with ERP/MRP systems (SAP, Oracle, or similar) for production reporting.
  • Forklift/pallet jack certification and experience operating material handling equipment to stage product and packaging materials.
  • Understanding of OEE, downtime tracking, scrap metrics, and basic production math for yield and rate calculations.
  • Knowledge of labeling and coding systems (thermal transfer printers) and traceability best practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate or diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or Manufacturing Technology.
  • Food safety certifications (ServSafe, HACCP) or manufacturing safety training.
