Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a box/straight truck safely and legally on local and regional routes, delivering and picking up freight on time while maintaining a clean driving record and adhering to company schedules and DOT/FMCSA regulations.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections, documenting defects or maintenance needs and reporting issues to fleet maintenance to ensure vehicle safety and compliance.
  • Accurately complete and maintain required driver paperwork, including electronic logging device (ELD) records, paper logs when required, bill of lading (BOL), proof of delivery (POD), and any chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Load, unload, and secure cargo using proper techniques, straps, load bars, pallet jacks, and tie-downs to prevent damage and ensure balanced weight distribution consistent with federal and company cargo securement standards.
  • Use handheld devices, route optimization software, GPS navigation, and manifest systems to follow assigned routes, capture POD signatures, and update delivery status in real time to support logistics visibility and on-time performance.
  • Provide professional, courteous customer service at delivery and pickup locations, including communicating delays, handling customer questions, obtaining required signatures, and documenting any delivery exceptions or damaged goods.
  • Adhere to hours-of-service (HOS) rules, rest break requirements, and company attendance policies to maintain compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Secure and reconcile freight at origin and destination, verifying counts, SKU numbers, and product condition against manifests and reporting discrepancies, shortages, or damaged items immediately.
  • Safely operate truck-mounted equipment or accessories commonly found on box trucks (e.g., roll-up doors, liftgates, ramps), performing operational checks and following manufacturer safety guidelines.
  • Execute scheduled maintenance basics including checking engine oil, coolant, tires, lights, brakes, and securing fuel levels, documenting service needs, and coordinating with maintenance for repairs to reduce downtime.
  • Conduct basic on-the-road troubleshooting for common vehicle issues, communicate effectively with dispatch and roadside assistance, and follow company procedures for breakdowns or safety incidents.
  • Follow company safety policies and participate in required safety meetings, driver training, DOT compliance briefings, and defensive driving programs to continuously improve performance and safety culture.
  • Adhere to load-specific handling procedures for fragile, hazardous (if authorized), perishable, or time-sensitive cargo, including temperature checks and special securement or placarding as required.
  • Assist warehouse and cross-dock teams with staging, scanning, and pallet movement during peak periods to optimize route completion and reduce turnaround time.
  • Collect and process customer payments, COD transactions, or delivery paperwork when required, following company cash handling and receipting procedures and ensuring accurate remittance.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and professional appearance, ensuring company branding is visible and the truck meets health and safety expectations for customer-facing interactions.
  • Participate in route planning meetings and provide feedback on route efficiency, delivery windows, and customer constraints to support continuous improvement of delivery operations.
  • Report all incidents, near-misses, accidents, cargo claims, or customer disputes immediately following company incident reporting procedures and cooperating with investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with pre-employment and ongoing DOT requirements including drug and alcohol screening, medical card maintenance, and background checks, and maintain records required for audits.
  • Practice and promote load safety practices such as proper weight distribution, secure tie-down patterns, and safe material handling techniques to minimize risk and damages during transit.
  • Support seasonal or surge operations by covering additional routes, performing double shifts, or assisting with special project deliveries while managing fatigue and safety considerations.
  • Train and mentor new drivers on company systems, safety protocols, route best practices, and customer service expectations as assigned by leadership.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist operations teams with inventory counts, scanning, and cycle count reconciliation when routes permit to reduce warehouse bottlenecks.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by documenting recurring delivery issues, route inefficiencies, and customer feedback for route optimization and process changes.
  • Cross-train on other driving equipment or roles such as delivery vans, straight truck variations, or light tractor operations to increase operational flexibility.
  • Support emergency relief or last-minute pickup requests by coordinating with dispatch to re-prioritize deliveries and minimize service disruptions.
  • Maintain professional relationships with warehouse personnel, customers, and third-party carriers to facilitate smooth handoffs and coordinated pickups.
  • Attend required safety, compliance, and customer service training sessions and complete online/onsite certification renewals as needed.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid CDL Class B (or Class A) driver's license in good standing, with appropriate endorsements as required by the employer (e.g., air brakes).
  • Proven experience with electronic logging devices (ELD) and familiarity with hours-of-service (HOS) rules and DOT/FMCSA compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle pre-trip, post-trip inspection procedures and CDL-required maintenance documentation.

  • Familiarity with local and regional traffic patterns, commercial vehicle restrictions, parking and loading zone rules, and urban delivery constraints.
  • Experience with cash handling, collecting COD, and following company billing and remittance procedures, when required.
  • Forklift certification (preferred for some roles) and experience working in warehouse or dock environments is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of safe hazardous materials handling or placarding procedures if transporting HAZMAT (only if certified and authorized).
