Primary Functions
- Operate mechanical and CNC press brakes to bend, form, and shape a variety of materials (mild steel, stainless, aluminum) to the dimensions and tolerances specified on blueprints, work orders, and CAD/CAM outputs, ensuring parts meet dimensional and cosmetic quality requirements.

- Calculate bend allowances, springback, and setback adjustments using established formulas and experience; make micro-adjustments to achieve specified angles and tolerances.
- Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, protractors, height gauges, angle finders) to verify dimensional accuracy, angles, and straightness against engineering tolerances.
- Execute first-piece inspections and document setup dimensions, tooling used, and control plan measurements to support traceability and reduce setup time for repeat orders.
- Monitor machine performance, detect deviations, and troubleshoot issues such as misfeeds, tooling runout, press misalignment, and hydraulic/pneumatic irregularities; escalate mechanical or electrical faults to maintenance when necessary.
- Maintain production throughput and meet daily/weekly piece counts while balancing quality standards; prioritize work to support just-in-time schedules and minimize downstream bottlenecks.
- Ensure parts are properly identified, tagged, and staged according to routing instructions; coordinate with material handling to load/unload blanks, nests, and finished parts safely.
- Implement and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), First Article Inspection (FAI) processes, and work instructions to maintain consistent output and compliance with ISO/AS9100/TS standards where applicable.
- Conduct preventative maintenance checks on press brakes (lubrication, hydraulic fluid level, filters, safety interlocks) and complete routine maintenance logs to prolong equipment life and reduce unplanned downtime.
- Enforce safety protocols including lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, proper PPE usage, and ergonomically safe lifting/handling methods; participate in safety audits and incident investigations.
- Collaborate with Production Planning, Quality, and Engineering to resolve part nonconformances, implement corrective actions, and modify tooling or processes to reduce scrap and rework.
- Apply lean manufacturing principles (5S, SMED quick changeovers, continuous improvement) to shorten setup times, standardize best practices, and increase cell efficiency.
- Train and mentor junior operators or cross-train team members on press brake setup, tooling changeovers, and inspection methods to build bench strength and operational flexibility.
- Maintain accurate production documentation including job travelers, setup sheets, configuration records, and scrap/rework reports for traceability and continuous improvement metrics.
- Program and validate offline CAD/CAM-generated press brake programs where applicable; verify machine code or operator prompts against drawing intent to prevent part defects.
- Work with sheet metal nesting and cutting departments to ensure blank sizes and kerf allowances match forming requirements and that material handling does not damage surfaces or edges.
- Participate in root cause analysis for recurring defects (burrs, cracks, incorrect bend radii) and implement process or tooling modifications to eliminate defects.
- Coordinate with outside vendors for specialized tooling, precision dies, or press brake rebuilds; manage tooling inventory and recommend capital purchases to improve capability or reduce cycle time.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure press brake tooling is stored, labeled, and preserved to industry standards to maintain quality and reduce tool damage.
