Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read, interpret and follow architectural blueprints, masonry shop drawings, elevations and specifications to layout brick, block, stone, and veneer work with precise measurements and layout lines.
- Lay brick, concrete block, and stone in horizontal courses using mortars and adhesives, ensuring consistent joint widths, correct bond patterns and level courses for load-bearing walls, chimneys, and partitions.
- Mix, prepare and test mortar and grout to specified proportions (sand, cement, lime, additives), adjust mix for weather conditions, and maintain proper workability and curing schedules.
- Cut bricks, blocks and stone using hand tools, power saws, chisels and grinders to create fit-for-purpose shapes for corners, arches, sills, and custom details.
- Construct and form arches, columns, steps, lintels and decorative masonry features using templates, forms and specialized techniques, ensuring aesthetic and structural quality.
- Install brick and stone veneer systems including proper anchoring, flashing, weep systems, air barriers and insulation interfaces to prevent moisture intrusion and comply with manufacturer and code requirements.
- Perform tuckpointing and repointing to remove deteriorated mortar and replace with new mortar that matches original color, texture and tooling for historic restoration and maintenance projects.
- Install reinforcement (rebar, bond beams, lintels, anchors and ties) and embed plates as instructed to meet structural engineering requirements and seismic or wind load specifications.
- Build, align and plumb masonry units with precision using levels, plumbs, string lines and laser layout tools to achieve tight tolerances and straight sightlines across long runs and façades.
- Apply waterproofing, sealants, and protective coatings to masonry surfaces and joints, and advise on appropriate breathable vs. non-breathable systems in restoration contexts.
- Coordinate with carpenters, roofers, concrete crews and site supervisors to sequence masonry work with site logistics, formwork, scaffolding, and concrete placements.
- Read and implement specifications related to ASTM standards, local building codes and manufacturer installation instructions; correct non-conforming work proactively.
- Conduct demolition and selective removal of existing masonry for repair or replacement, protecting adjacent structures and utilities and performing controlled disposal of debris.
- Install chimneys, fireplace surrounds and hearths, ensuring proper flue construction, clearances, caps, and code-compliant terminations.
- Repair cracks, spalls and efflorescence through techniques including patching, crack stitching and compatible mortar application to restore structural and visual integrity.
- Operate and maintain masonry equipment and small power tools (mixers, saws, grinders, vibrators, hoists); perform routine maintenance and report defects to minimize downtime.
- Supervise and train apprentices and laborers in safe masonry practices, layout techniques and finishing methods while delegating tasks to meet schedule and quality requirements.
- Prepare accurate material takeoffs and contribute to job estimates by calculating brick, block, mortar, reinforcement and accessory quantities.
- Perform final inspections and finishing work (joint tooling, cleaning, pointing, color matching) to deliver polished, consistent masonry surfaces ready for handover.
- Maintain detailed daily production records, timesheets and site logs; report progress, material usage and issues to foreman or project manager.
- Ensure jobsite housekeeping, secure storage of materials and tools, and safe scaffold and ladder setup and use to comply with OSHA and company safety programs.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings and on-site problem solving to develop constructible details, recommend value engineering, or address unforeseen conditions.
- Assist with mock-ups and sample panels for owner approval, including color, joint profile and layout verification prior to full-scale production.
- Implement quality control checks, dimensional verification and tolerance measurements throughout construction to minimize rework and warranty exposure.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in procurement by tracking inventory levels of bricks, blocks, mortar, ties and anchors and requesting reorder when needed.
- Support project documentation by photographing completed work, logging repair history, and maintaining warranty records for masonry systems.
- Collaborate with safety officers to complete toolbox talks, incident reports and maintain regulatory paperwork (OSHA, scaffold inspections).
- Participate in continuing training on new masonry materials, composite systems, waterproofing methods and historic preservation techniques.
- Provide on-site customer interaction during repairs or new construction to explain work scope, sequencing and expected outcomes.
- Adapt to schedule changes, weather delays and material substitutions while communicating impacts to supervisors and subcontractors.
