Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the detailed structural design and calculation packages for new and rehabilitated bridge structures (steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete, composite decks, timber, and modular systems), ensuring compliance with applicable codes such as AASHTO LRFD, Eurocode, AS 5100 and relevant national annexes.
  • Prepare and review comprehensive design deliverables including design reports, analysis models, hand calculations, cross-sections, reinforcement schedules, connection details and construction sequences that are clear, auditable and defensible for tender and construction stages.
  • Build, validate and execute finite element and line-element models (MIDAS Civil, LUSAS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, OpenSees or equivalent) to assess structural response, limit states, load distribution, dynamic effects and construction-stage behaviour for complex bridge geometries and staged works.
  • Perform load rating, bridge assessment and evaluation for existing structures including field condition assessment interpretation, capacity calculations, posting recommendations and retrofit/strengthening design using AASHTO/Local standards.
  • Coordinate and integrate geotechnical inputs for foundation design (bored piles, driven piles, spread footings, caissons), liaising with geotechnical engineers to incorporate soil-structure interaction, pile capacity checks and settlement predictions into the structural design.
  • Deliver seismic and dynamic analysis for bridges (response spectrum, time-history analysis, soil-structure interaction) and specify seismic detailing, bearing and expansion joint systems to meet code and client risk requirements.
  • Design temporary works and construction support such as falsework, shoring, launching gantries, bearing replacement procedures and erection sequences to ensure safety and constructability during construction and maintenance operations.
  • Prepare and review detailed shop drawings, fabrication and erection drawings, steel connection designs, and contractor submittals; provide timely technical responses (RFI/ITR) and approve or comment on contractor drawings.
  • Lead multidisciplinary coordination with hydraulics (HEC-RAS, 2D modelling), traffic, utilities, permitting authorities, architects and rail/highway authorities to resolve clashes, inform pier/abutment placement, scour countermeasures and alignment constraints.
  • Produce durable specifications, material schedules and quality acceptance criteria for concrete mix design, prestressing, reinforcing steel, bearings, expansion joints, protective coatings and drainage systems consistent with project procurement strategies.
  • Conduct constructability reviews and value engineering workshops to optimize cost, schedule and risk, recommending alternative materials (prefabricated modular elements, precast systems), spans and detailing that reduce site duration and lifecycle costs.
  • Perform detailed fatigue, fracture and durability assessments for steel and composite bridges, including weld detailing, fatigue life estimation, corrosion protection strategies and maintenance interventions tailored to environmental exposure classes.
  • Prepare bridge hydraulic and scour assessments, integrate scour countermeasures into pier and foundation design, and coordinate with environmental specialists and regulatory bodies for permitting and mitigation measures.
  • Lead or contribute to preparation of tender documentation, pricing assumptions, risk registers, method statements and obtaining approvals from clients and statutory bodies; support pre-bid technical clarifications.
  • Provide on-site technical support during critical construction stages and inspections, attend site visits and prepare field review reports, proposed remedial actions and as-built record updates.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, review their analyses and drawings for technical accuracy, good practice and compliance with office standards; lead internal training on software, codes and lessons learned from projects.
  • Ensure strict quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on all design outputs, implementing checklists, peer reviews, verification of modelling assumptions and traceable calculation files.
  • Contribute to client presentations, stakeholder workshops and public consultations by preparing clear technical summaries, diagrams and responses to technical questions raised by authorities or the public.
  • Manage multiple projects or design packages simultaneously, tracking budgets, deliverable milestones, resource allocation and subcontractor inputs while escalating issues and recommending mitigation strategies.
  • Undertake lifecycle cost and maintenance planning inputs for bridge assets, preparing work packages and recommendations for rehabilitation, strengthening, or replacement prioritisation.
  • Stay current with industry best practice, new materials and technologies (FRP, UHPC, high-performance steels), emerging design codes and digital tools (BIM for bridges, parametric design) and incorporate innovations where appropriate.
  • Conduct third-party reviews and independent checks as required for high-risk or critical structures and prepare concise independent reviewer reports with actionable findings.
  • Lead or support forensic investigations and failure analysis for damaged or collapsed structures, prepare technical findings, remediation strategies and legal/insurance documentation where necessary.

Secondary Functions

  • Support preparation of proposals, statements of qualifications and technical appendices to win new bridge design work.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of office standards, templates, detail libraries and code interpretation guidance.
  • Contribute to company safety, environment and sustainability initiatives by embedding low-carbon materials, life-cycle thinking and constructable designs.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering with accredited program recognition.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree (MEng/MSc) in Structural or Bridge Engineering, or postgraduate study in advanced structural analysis, seismic engineering or materials.
  • Professional registration / chartered status (PE, CEng, RPEQ, EngNZ or equivalent) strongly preferred.
