Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive commercial risk assessments for new and renewal accounts, including evaluating loss history, exposures, operations, and industry-specific hazards to determine insurability and appropriate coverage structures.
- Prepare detailed, market-ready proposals and submitted quotations — including coverage summaries, limits, deductibles, pricing assumptions, and underwriting rationale — and present options to brokers and clients.
- Analyze policy language, endorsements, exclusions, and limits to provide clear coverage interpretations and recommend tailored modifications that mitigate client exposures while protecting insurer interests.
- Underwrite and price commercial accounts across multiple lines (property, general liability, business auto, workers’ compensation, professional liability, cyber, umbrella/excess) using rating tools, actuarial guidance, and portfolio targets.
- Manage end-to-end policy lifecycle tasks: issue new policies, process mid-term endorsements, handle renewals, execute cancellations/non-renewals, and ensure timely policy documentation and certificates of insurance.
- Maintain and update accurate underwriting files, exposure databases, and policy management systems (including ACORD forms, internal rating engines, and CRM) to support audits, reporting, and compliance.
- Conduct loss-run analysis and trending to identify frequency and severity drivers; develop loss control recommendations and collaborate with risk control teams to implement mitigation plans that reduce claims costs.
- Collaborate with producers, brokers, and internal claims teams to resolve coverage disputes, expedite claim handling, and participate in claim strategy discussions for large or complex losses.
- Lead placement strategies for complex or large commercial accounts by negotiating terms with wholesale brokers, MGAs, and carriers, coordinating facultative or treaty reinsurance when necessary.
- Drive retention and client satisfaction by proactively managing renewals, providing competitive renewal options, and communicating underwriting requirements and changes to producers and clients.
- Review and approve submissions within delegated authority while escalating complex, high-exposure, or specialty-line risks to senior underwriters or underwriting committees for review and binding.
- Monitor portfolio performance against loss ratios, retention metrics, and underwriting profitability goals; adjust underwriting appetite and pricing strategies in response to market changes.
- Develop and deliver technical training and mentoring to junior underwriters, account managers, and producers on product coverage, rating methodology, and underwriting best practices.
- Support internal audit, compliance, and regulatory reporting activities by preparing documentation, responding to inquiries, and ensuring adherence to state and federal insurance regulations and company policies.
- Manage broker and client relationships through regular business reviews, risk management consultations, and targeted cross-sell opportunities to deepen account penetration and diversify revenue streams.
- Coordinate with product development, actuarial, and data analytics teams to pilot new coverage enhancements, improve pricing models, and use predictive analytics to refine risk selection.
- Negotiate complex endorsements, premium audits, and retrospective rating adjustments; ensure accurate calculation and billing of audit premiums and adjustments.
- Oversee premium collection processes related to new business and renewals, work with finance to resolve billing disputes, and ensure accurate accounting of written and earned premium.
- Prepare underwriting memos and client-facing summaries for executive review or placement committees, articulating assumptions, exposures, recommended terms, and financial impact.
- Act as the subject matter expert for targeted industry classes (e.g., construction, manufacturing, hospitality, professional services), staying current on emerging risks, regulatory shifts, and market capacity.
- Participate in business development activities including RFP responses, carrier/broker negotiations, and marketplace intelligence to win new business within assigned territories or industry verticals.
- Conduct onsite and virtual risk surveys where appropriate, document physical and operational risk control conditions, and recommend corrective actions that support insured safety and loss reduction.
- Implement automation and workflow improvements to reduce turnaround time for quotes, endorsements, and renewals while maintaining quality and compliance standards.
- Ensure clear and timely communication across underwriting, claims, operations, and sales teams during account transitions, acquisitions, or significant policy changes to minimize operational disruptions.
