Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate manual, semi-automatic and fully automated button presses to produce round, square, or custom-shaped buttons to specification, maintaining consistent cycle times and meeting daily production quotas.
  • Set up and align dies, tooling, mandrels, and press fixtures; perform precise adjustments to ensure accurate crimping, sealing and button alignment according to job specs.
  • Prepare and load artwork, printed shells, mylar covers and pinbacks in the correct sequence; verify print orientation and registration before runs begin.
  • Perform die cutting and trimming of printed materials using arbor presses, hydraulic cutters, guillotines or CNC cutters while minimizing waste and ensuring clean edges.
  • Inspect each production run visually and with measuring tools for color accuracy, print registration, concentricity, edge crimp quality and functional pinback operation; quarantine defective lots and document nonconformances.
  • Change over presses between jobs quickly and accurately: remove old tooling, mount new tooling, recalibrate mechanical stops, and perform test runs to validate settings.
  • Maintain accurate job logs and production records including counts, scrap rates, setup times, material usage and quality check results for traceability and performance analysis.
  • Assemble multi-component products (pins, magnets, keychains, buttons with backing cards) including adhesive application, hand crimping, riveting or heat sealing as required by product design.
  • Troubleshoot common mechanical and feed issues on button presses and supporting equipment, performing first-line repairs such as replacing belts, bearings, springs and sensors; escalate complex mechanical problems to maintenance.
  • Load raw material rolls, printed sheets and component inventory into feeders and hoppers; monitor stock levels and report replenishment needs to inventory control or purchasing.
  • Operate and maintain finishing equipment such as laminators, UV coaters, dryers, and inspection stations to protect print surface and improve durability of finished buttons.
  • Ensure consistent color and print quality by checking proofs against finished parts, communicating color variances to print/graphics and adjusting machine settings accordingly.
  • Pack finished goods efficiently and securely according to customer packaging requirements, creating batch labels, packing slips and carrier documentation for shipping.
  • Execute small batch and custom orders with attention to detail — handling one-offs and short turnaround projects while adhering to customer-specified finishes and dimensions.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe workstation; follow 5S principles and contribute to lean manufacturing initiatives to reduce setup time and scrap.
  • Participate in daily production meetings and communicate job status, bottlenecks and improvement suggestions to supervisors and cross-functional team members.
  • Train and mentor new operators on machine setup, safe operation, quality standards and company best practices to build a capable team.
  • Adhere to all company HSE (Health, Safety, and Environmental) policies, including lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements and safe handling of adhesives and solvents.
  • Implement and support continuous improvement projects to streamline flow, reduce cycle time and cut material waste; assist with time studies and root cause analysis.
  • Coordinate with customer service and sales for special instructions, rush orders, custom finishes, and proof approvals; ensure customer specifications are followed exactly.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication, routine cleaning, inspection of wear parts and calibration checks to maximize uptime.
  • Operate digital layout and light prepress tools (e.g., imposition templates, registration guides) to confirm artwork sizes, bleed areas and orientation for efficient press runs.
  • Verify component compatibility for accessory attachments (magnets, safety pins, backs) and recommend alternative components when supply constraints or quality issues arise.
  • Support seasonal high-volume production runs by working flexible shifts or overtime when required to meet peak demand and delivery commitments.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory reconciliation, labeling of raw materials and reporting discrepancies to warehouse or purchasing.
  • Participate in product development and prototyping by providing practical feedback on manufacturability, tooling constraints and cost-efficient design alternatives.
  • Help maintain the print and cutting area, including removal of ink or adhesive buildup and routine cleaning of rollers and guides to prevent defects.
  • Support shipping and receiving during peak periods by staging finished pallets, preparing carrier pickups and verifying order accuracy.
  • Document process changes and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new equipment or product lines to ensure consistent production across operators.
  • Cross-train in adjacent production areas (e.g., sticker cutting, heat transfer application, screen printing) to increase team flexibility and reduce bottlenecks.
  • Participate in quality audits and corrective action processes by providing production-level insight and implementing process fixes.
  • Provide photo documentation and sample sets for customer approvals and internal quality benchmarks.
  • Support sustainability initiatives by identifying opportunities to reduce material waste, switch to recyclable substrates, and optimize packing materials.
  • Act as a point of contact for external vendors during tooling service calls, parts deliveries and equipment installations.
