Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Read, interpret, and apply detailed cabinet shop drawings, blueprints, cut lists, and CNC programs to lay out, cut, assemble, and install custom and production cabinetry to exacting tolerances.
Accurately measure field dimensions and verify on-site conditions prior to fabrication or install, documenting discrepancies and coordinating changes with project managers and designers.
Operate and maintain woodworking machinery including table saws, panel saws, routers, jointers, planers, band saws, edgebanders, sanders, dowel machines, and CNC routers to cut, shape, and rout cabinet components safely and efficiently.
Fabricate cabinet carcasses, face frames, doors, drawers, panels, shelving, and mouldings using a range of materials (plywood, MDF, solid wood, laminates, thermofoil, veneer) while maintaining consistent quality and fit.
Assemble cabinets using mechanical fasteners, biscuits, dowels, pocket screws, cam locks, glue, and clamps; ensure square, rigid assemblies and consistent reveal and joint alignment.
Install hinges, European hardware, soft-close slides, concealed hardware, pulls, knobs, and specialty fittings, adjusting and aligning doors and drawers for smooth operation and proper reveal.
Fit and install countertops (laminate, solid surface, stone templates), backsplashes, scribe molding, toe kicks, and trim work as part of a complete cabinetry installation package.
Apply finishes including sanding, staining, sealing, painting, and lacquer/spray finishing; prepare surfaces for staining/painting and perform touch-ups to meet finish standards and customer expectations.
Conduct precise edge banding, veneering, and laminate application to cabinet components and drawer fronts, ensuring flush edges and blemish-free surfaces.
Set up, program, and work with CNC equipment (where applicable) to optimize nesting layouts, reduce material waste, and maintain consistent production quality.
Inspect finished cabinetry for fit, finish, functionality, and dimensional accuracy; perform corrective actions and quality control checks before shipment or installation.
Package and prepare cabinetry for safe transport: protect finished surfaces, label components, and coordinate with shipping and logistics teams to ensure on-time delivery and damage prevention.
Maintain accurate production records, job logs, and cut lists; update inventory usage and report material shortages or quality issues to the shop supervisor.
Read and interpret manufacturer specifications and warranty instructions for hardware and finishes; ensure installations meet warranty and code requirements.
Collaborate with designers, estimators, and project managers to provide fabrication feedback, value engineering suggestions, and lead-time estimates to optimize project outcomes.
Mentor and train junior cabinetmakers, apprentices, and installers in safe shop practices, tool operation, joinery techniques, and quality standards.
Troubleshoot fit problems, reveal misalignments, and on-site installation obstacles; fabricate site-specific fillers, scribe pieces, and shims to ensure a precise finish.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment by sweeping, removing scrap, tagging broken tools, and enforcing PPE, fire, and dust-control protocols.
Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on shop machinery, band saw blades, router bits, and measuring tools; coordinate with maintenance vendors for major repairs or calibration.
Execute custom modifications and repair work for renovation projects, replacements, and retrofit cabinetry, restoring function and appearance to meet client expectations.
Ensure compliance with local building codes, accessibility standards, and client-specific requirements during fabrication and installation phases.
Estimate material needs and optimize panel usage to reduce waste while maintaining quality and meeting project deadlines.
Participate in pre-installation site visits and coordinate installation schedules, access requirements, and delivery windows with general contractors and clients.
Provide excellent customer-facing communication when required: explain installation steps, confirm selections, and address on-site concerns professionally and promptly.

Secondary Functions

Assist in shop continuous improvement initiatives: suggest layout changes, tooling upgrades, and process improvements to increase throughput and reduce defects.
Support inventory control by receiving deliveries, verifying counts and quality of materials (plywood, hardware, finishes), and updating stock records.
Help prepare samples and swatches for client approvals, coordinating finish choices and mock-ups with design staff.
