Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately measure job sites and existing conditions, verify architectural drawings and shop drawings, identify potential obstacles and document measurements to ensure custom cabinetry fits precisely during installation.
  • Layout, mark and install base and wall cabinets, tall cabinets, islands and built‑ins, ensuring correct spacing, alignment, plumb, level and square per manufacturer specifications and site tolerances.
  • Perform precise shimming and leveling of cabinets on uneven floors and walls, securely anchor cabinets to studs or blocking and make site adjustments to assure structural integrity and proper operation.
  • Install cabinet hardware including hinges, pulls, knobs, soft‑close mechanisms and drawer slides; adjust hardware for smooth, consistent operation and aesthetic alignment.
  • Coordinate and install countertops (laminate, solid surface, granite, quartz) in partnership with countertop vendors: template, verify seam locations, secure tops and apply sealants for a finished installation.
  • Field‑fit and trim cabinet doors, drawer fronts and filler pieces, perform on‑site scribing, trimming and adjustments to maintain consistent reveal and finish quality.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, elevations and assembly instructions, and communicate discrepancies to the project manager or cabinet shop for resolution.
  • Remove existing cabinetry, dispose of debris safely and in compliance with site policies, and prepare surfaces for new installation including patching substrate or installing blocking as required.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors (plumbers, electricians, tile setters, countertop fabricators) to sequence work, protect installed cabinetry and ensure timely project completion.
  • Repair and refinish damaged cabinetry and millwork, perform minor carpentry repairs, and provide warranty service or touch‑ups as needed to meet customer expectations.
  • Follow manufacturer installation guidelines and building codes, secure permitting information when applicable, and document compliance during installations.
  • Maintain organized on‑site inventory and tools, track materials used versus delivered, and report shortages or damaged materials to project management promptly.
  • Set and adhere to daily installation schedules, meet project milestones, communicate delays early, and work efficiently to complete jobs on time without sacrificing quality.
  • Perform quality control inspections at install completion, verify door/drawer operation, gaps and finish appearance, and capture before/after photos for project records and customer confirmation.
  • Use hand and power tools safely and skillfully (table saw, track saw, drill, pocket hole jig, router, level, miter saw, pneumatic nailers) to cut, fasten and finish cabinetry components on site.
  • Install backer/backsplash blocking and coordinate with tile or backsplash installers, ensuring correct heights and clearances for appliances and plumbing fixtures.
  • Adjust and shim appliances and cabinet interfaces to guarantee proper fit for refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and built‑in ovens, and verify that appliance clearances meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Apply sealants, adhesives and protective finishes to cabinet surfaces and joints, ensure neat application and proper cure times for long‑term performance.
  • Enforce job site safety standards: use personal protective equipment (PPE), maintain clean work areas, secure ladders and scaffolding, and report hazards or incidents immediately.
  • Communicate professionally with homeowners, general contractors and project managers to explain installation steps, schedule expectations and address on‑site questions or concerns.
  • Document installation activities, sign‑off checklists and warranty paperwork, record any deviations or change orders and escalate unusual site conditions to the project lead.
  • Mentor junior installers and apprentices, demonstrate installation techniques, enforce best practices and contribute to continuous improvement of installation processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the cabinet shop with minor fabrication or on‑site modifications when necessary to expedite installations and reduce rework.
  • Help with materials staging, loading and unloading trucks, and secure cabinetry during transport to prevent damage.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and company vehicles, schedule repairs and keep accurate maintenance logs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Field measuring and layout expertise for kitchen and bath cabinetry; precision to 1/16" in fitting and scribing.
  • Proficient at installing base, wall, tall, island cabinets and custom millwork; strong knowledge of standard cabinet assembly and attachment methods.
  • Finish carpentry skills including trimming, scribing, molding and installation of face frames, crown moulding and toe kicks.
  • Countertop coordination and template verification (laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface) and on‑site seam and substrate preparation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Manufacturer certification programs (e.g., Blum, Salice hardware training) or countertop templating certifications advantageous.
