Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and accurately read architectural drawings, shop drawings, CAD/CAM files and blueprints to layout cabinet components, joinery details and installation sequences for residential and commercial millwork projects.
- Measure job sites and existing conditions; verify field dimensions and prepare accurate cut lists and templates to ensure on-site fit and alignment of cabinets, countertops and built-in millwork.
- Layout, cut, and shape sheet goods (plywood, MDF, laminates) and solid wood materials using table saws, panel saws, jointers, planers and CNC routers to produce precise parts for cabinetry assemblies.
- Assemble cabinet carcasses, face frames, doors, drawers and specialty components using dowels, biscuits, cam locks, pocket screws, biscuits and traditional joinery techniques to achieve tight seams and structural integrity.
- Install hinges, slides, catches, knobs, pulls, soft-close mechanisms, European hardware and specialty fittings; adjust hardware for smooth operation and proper alignment.
- Operate and program CNC routers and CNC fabrication equipment (using Cabinet Vision, VCarve, Alphacam or similar) to optimize nesting, minimize material waste and consistently produce complex parts.
- Perform edge-banding, veneering, lamination and solid-surface applications, ensuring seam precision and finish continuity on cabinet edges and visible surfaces.
- Prepare, sand and finish cabinetry components using stains, lacquers, paints, catalyzed finishes and clear coats; apply proper surface preparation methods and curing techniques for durable results.
- Install finished cabinets, shelving, built-ins and counter tops at job sites; perform blocking, shimming, leveling and sealing to achieve plumb, square and secure installations.
- Fabricate and install custom moldings, trim, door surrounds and architectural millwork components to match finish carpentry standards and project specifications.
- Conduct quality inspections at key production stages and prior to shipment/installation to identify defects, ensure tolerances and verify matching of grain, color and finish across assemblies.
- Create accurate material take-offs and assist estimators by providing shop-level input on labor, cutting waste, material yields and special hardware requirements for bids and proposals.
- Maintain and track inventory of sheet goods, hardware, adhesives, abrasives and finishing supplies; report material shortages and assist in sourcing specialty materials.
- Maintain jigs, fixtures, templates and shop tooling; design and fabricate custom jigs to improve repeatability, safety and cycle time for repetitive assemblies.
- Troubleshoot fit, alignment and functional issues for complex assemblies and retrofit or repair cabinets and millwork in the shop or at client locations.
- Coordinate with designers, project managers, subcontractors and installers to sequence shop production, deliveries and on-site installation for multiple concurrent projects.
- Follow company and OSHA safety protocols; perform routine preventive maintenance on woodworking equipment, guards, dust collection systems and hand tools to ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain precise shop math and measurement records, record machining parameters and adjust processes to maintain part accuracy within specified tolerances.
- Provide skilled mentorship and training to apprentices and junior cabinet makers on joinery techniques, safe equipment operation and shop best practices.
- Fabricate custom components from solid surface materials and composite substrates; trim, seam and polish countertops and integrated work surfaces.
- Implement continuous improvement ideas to reduce cycle time, reduce scrap, improve ergonomics and raise finish and fit quality for cabinetry products.
- Document as-built conditions, field changes and installation notes; update shop drawings and communicate revisions to production and installation teams.
- Execute restoration and repair of existing cabinets including hinge replacement, drawer rebuilds, veneer repair and re-finishing to extend the longevity of installed millwork.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with loading and unloading of deliveries, staging cabinets for shipping and coordinating logistics with warehouse and delivery teams.
- Support cross-functional teams by offering shop-floor insights during design reviews and constructability assessments.
- Participate in customer walkthroughs when necessary to clarify cabinet features, hardware locations and finish selections.
- Contribute to safety meetings, tool training sessions and continuous improvement initiatives within the shop.
- Maintain clean, organized workstations and enforce 5S shop standards to minimize damage to finished millwork and reduce cycle times.
- Help estimate labor hours for prototype or nonstandard cabinetry by logging time and complexity metrics for management.
