This role covers coaxial and fiber-optic systems (FTTx), DOCSIS/IP signal delivery, outside-plant (OSP) and inside-plant (ISP) work, and customer-facing activities such as on-site testing, documentation, and service-level troubleshooting. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform end-to-end installation of coaxial and fiber-optic cable systems at residential and commercial locations, including running drops, terminating connectors, and installing network interface devices (NID) and customer premises equipment (CPE) to ensure reliable service delivery.
  • Execute fiber optic fusion splicing and mechanical splicing to industry standards, including proper handling, cleaning, and protection of splices in splice enclosures or handholes to preserve long-term signal integrity.
  • Conduct optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) testing, power meter/laser testing, and loss budgeting on fiber runs to document loss values and verify system performance against SLA expectations.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot cable modems, set-top boxes, routers, ONTs, amplifiers, splitters, taps, and line extenders; validate provisioning and signal levels for data, video, and voice services.
  • Diagnose and repair signal quality issues using spectrum analyzers, signal level meters, return path monitors, and DOCSIS diagnostic tools to identify ingress/egress, noise, or attenuation sources and apply corrective actions.
  • Perform outside-plant tasks such as aerial and underground cable placement, pole climbing, truck-mounted boom operations, trenching supervision, and conduit and vault access while following company and industry safety codes.
  • Route and pull cable through structured pathways, verify proper bend radii for fiber, secure cables and hardware per installation standards, and apply weatherproofing, sealing, and strain relief as required.
  • Read and interpret network blueprints, site plans, splice maps, and work orders to plan installations and coordinate with other trades and utility locators for safe excavation and overhead work.
  • Maintain accurate daily work logs, create test reports, update ticketing systems, and document customer interactions, as-built changes, and network modifications for auditing and future troubleshooting.
  • Respond to service outages, perform emergency repairs, and participate in on-call rotations to restore customer connectivity quickly, escalating complex issues to engineering or NOC as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and line conditioning on amplifiers, nodes, taps, and fiber distribution panels to sustain signal quality and reduce repeat service calls.
  • Install and maintain grounding and bonding systems, surge protection, and power supplies for active network components to protect equipment and minimize downtime from electrical incidents.
  • Coordinate and communicate with dispatch, project managers, and customers to confirm appointment windows, scope of work, expected disruptions, and completion timelines while maintaining a professional on-site presence.
  • Follow industry safety regulations (OSHA, NESC), company safety programs, and traffic control protocols while using personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, and vehicle safety systems during field work.
  • Assist with fiber/network build projects including aerial make-ready, pole attachment coordination, conduit pulls, vault installations, and fiber backbone terminations to expand network coverage.
  • Troubleshoot complex multi-service outages involving coax/fiber handoffs, CMTS or headend issues, and IP provisioning anomalies, working with cross-functional teams to identify root causes.
  • Perform inventory management for splicing kits, connectors, test equipment, and spare parts; keep company vehicles stocked, organized, and inspected for safe field operations.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and apprentices on safe work practices, proper tool use, splicing techniques, testing procedures, and customer service expectations to raise team capabilities.
  • Perform precise connector terminations for fiber (mechanical/epoxy/ultrasonic) and coax (compression, crimp) ensuring low-loss, reliable connections that meet vendor and company standards.
  • Execute network upgrades and migrations, including equipment swaps at nodes, CMTS or access devices, and customer premise equipment replacements, ensuring minimal customer impact and accurate cutovers.
  • Participate in quality assurance audits, follow checklists for critical installs, and remediate any deficiencies found in customer or network inspections to align with SLA and regulatory requirements.
  • Support coordination with utility companies and third-party contractors for pole attachments, permitting, and right-of-way access to ensure timely and compliant project execution.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide input into route design and fiber layout recommendations during project planning and pre-construction meetings based on field observations and practical constraints.
  • Support new product rollouts by providing installation feedback, identifying common failure modes, and suggesting process improvements for repeatable, scalable deployments.
  • Maintain and calibrate field test equipment, perform routine checks on OTDRs, meters, and fusion splicers, and request vendor service or replacements when necessary.
  • Participate in cross-functional troubleshooting with network operations, engineering, and provisioning teams to resolve systemic issues and reduce mean time to repair (MTTR).
  • Assist with inventory tracking and procurement requests for parts and tools, escalating shortages that could affect project timelines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by documenting installation best practices, job aids, and training materials for new technicians.
  • Support regulatory and safety compliance inspections by preparing vehicles and documentation, and by implementing corrective actions as directed.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Fiber optic fusion splicing (manual and automated splicers) and mechanical splicing techniques with a solid record of low-loss splices.
  • OTDR testing, interpretation of trace results, return loss/power meter testing, and optical loss budgeting for P2P and PON networks.
  • Coaxial cable installation, termination, compression/crimp techniques, and troubleshooting of amplifiers, taps, and splitters.
  • Knowledge of DOCSIS (2.0/3.0/3.1/4.0) concepts, CMTS basics, and downstream/upstream signal level diagnostics.
  • Hands-on experience with spectrum analyzers, signal level meters, leakage detectors, and other RF testing tools.
  • Basic IP networking knowledge (IPv4/IPv6 basics, NAT, DHCP), Ethernet connectivity testing, and ability to validate CPE provisioning with network tools.
  • Aerial and underground cable handling—secure anchoring, pole attachment techniques, conduit pulling, and vault access procedures.
  • Competence with fusion splicer maintenance, OTDR calibration, connector polishing, and proper handling/storage of fiber.
  • Understanding of grounding, bonding, surge protection, and AC/DC power considerations for field-installed electronics.
  • Proficiency with mobile devices, field ticketing systems, GIS/work order software, and completing accurate as-built documentation.
  • Familiarity with safety certifications and standards such as OSHA 10/30, NESC, and safe driving practices; ability to follow confined space and traffic control protocols.
  • Vehicle and equipment operation skills including use of bucket trucks, ladders, hand tools, and power tools required for field installations.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, network diagrams, splice maps, and interpret site/utility plans.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED; demonstrated hands-on experience in cable, electrical, or telecommunications work acceptable in lieu of formal education.

Preferred Education:
Associate degree or vocational certification in Telecommunications Technology, Electronics, Fiber Optics, or a related technical discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

Preferred Certifications (valued but not always required):
