A Cabling Technician installs, terminates, tests, and documents structured cabling systems for data, voice and low-voltage applications across commercial and data center environments. This role is responsible for running copper and fiber cabling, maintaining cable infrastructure, performing acceptance testing to industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI), supporting network equipment racks and patching, and ensuring compliance with safety and site-specific policies. The Cabling Technician works alongside project managers, network engineers and subcontractors to deliver on-time, high-quality cabling projects with clear as-built documentation.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, pull and route copper and fiber optic cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, single-mode and multi-mode fiber) through ceilings, conduits, cable trays and raceways while adhering to TIA/EIA standards and site-specific installation drawings.
  • Terminate, splice and polish fiber optic cables using fusion splicing and mechanical splicing techniques, and validate terminations with OTDR and power meter testing to meet acceptance criteria.
  • Perform precision RJ45 terminations and punch-downs on patch panels and jacks, ensuring proper pinouts, cable twist preservation, and minimal untwist per industry best practices.
  • Complete acceptance testing of copper and fiber links using Fluke testers and OTDRs, document test results, troubleshoot failing links, and rework terminations to achieve specified performance.
  • Build out and mount communication racks, cabinets and enclosures; install patch panels, switches, PDUs, cable managers and label/arrange cabling for proper airflow and maintenance access.
  • Create and maintain accurate as-built documentation, floor plans, cable schedules, labeling schemas and test result reports in electronic formats for handoff to clients and network operations.
  • Interpret blueprints, site drawings, network schematics and work orders, coordinating with site engineers to resolve conflicts and sequence work to meet project milestones.
  • Follow and enforce safety protocols, use personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout where required, and comply with OSHA and local safety regulations while performing field work.
  • Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, and end-clients to schedule installs, obtain site access and manage day-of-site logistics to minimize disruptions to business operations.
  • Install and terminate voice/data outlets, faceplates, and jacks in office and telecom rooms, verify connectivity to patch panels, and confirm service activation with network teams.
  • Perform cable pathway construction and retrofit work including installation of cable tray, ladder rack, conduit, J-hooks, and seismic bracing per mechanical and electrical codes.
  • Perform grounding and bonding of cabling systems and racks to building grounding systems to protect equipment and meet code requirements.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory, order consumables (connectors, patch cords, cable ties, sleeves) and manage tool calibration and testing equipment tracking for accurate field operations.
  • Provide on-site troubleshooting for cabling-related incidents, rapidly isolate physical layer faults, and implement repairs to restore network connectivity with minimal downtime.
  • Conduct site surveys and pre-install assessments to determine optimal cable pathways, rack placement, cable lengths, and equipment access while documenting obstruction or environmental issues.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage and routing of plenum-rated and riser-rated cabling where specified, and adhere to fire code requirements for penetrations and firestop remediation.
  • Implement structured cable management practices — color coding, labeling, tying, and routing — to ensure long-term maintainability and simplified moves/adds/changes (MACs).
  • Conduct post-installation walkthroughs with clients and stakeholders to review completed work, capture punch-list items and secure sign-off for project acceptance.
  • Support moves, adds and changes (MAC) activity including re-patching, new outlet installs, and relocations while maintaining accurate records of changes to the cabling system.
  • Provide after-hours or scheduled maintenance support for critical installs and data center work requiring minimal business disruption during normal business hours.
  • Train junior installers or apprentices on proper termination techniques, testing procedures and safety practices to uplift team skills and maintain quality standards.
  • Verify power over Ethernet (PoE) endpoint cabling and reporting issues that may affect VoIP phones, wireless access points and IoT devices; coordinate with electrical teams for power needs.
  • Work with inventory control and asset management teams to tag and track network assets and cabling components for lifecycle management and audits.
  • Assist in vendor coordination and quality control of OEM-supplied racks, patch panels, and cabling materials to ensure installed components meet project specifications.

Secondary Functions

  • Support change management and ticketing systems by updating service tickets with physical layer findings, estimated remediation times, and closure notes.
  • Participate in project kickoffs and provide technical input on cabling scope, material takeoffs, and labor estimates to help define accurate project plans.
  • Contribute to preventative maintenance programs, scheduled audits, and cable plant assessments to identify aging infrastructure and recommend upgrades.
  • Assist network engineering teams during network equipment swaps by pre-staging cabling, labeling, and coordinating cutover windows.
  • Help enforce company and client policies related to site access, security clearances and visitor escorting on sensitive customer premises.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to standardize installation techniques, accelerate deployment timelines and reduce rework rates.
  • Manage subcontractor crews on-site for larger installs, ensuring adherence to quality, safety and schedule expectations set by the prime contractor.
  • Provide client-focused communication to explain physical layer issues, recommended fixes and impact on network services in non-technical language when needed.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Structured cabling installation (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a/Cat7) including cable routing, termination, labeling and documentation.
  • Fiber optic termination and splicing (single-mode and multi-mode), including OTDR and power meter testing and interpretation.
  • Certification-level copper and fiber testing with Fluke testers, Certifiers and OTDR devices; ability to generate and deliver test reports.
  • Rack and cabinet installation, patch panel configuration, cable management and basic rack-mounted equipment handling (switches, PDUs).
  • Knowledge of TIA/EIA standards, BICSI best practices, and local electrical/fire codes affecting cable pathways and penetrations.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, punch-down tools (110/66), crimpers, fusion splicer, cable pullers and labeling machines.
  • Conduit, cable tray, ladder rack, and J-hook installation techniques including route planning and mechanical fastening.
  • Understanding of grounding and bonding techniques for telecommunications cabling and equipment racks.
  • Ability to read blueprints, network drawings and site plans to translate design into physical installation.
  • Experience using work order, ticketing and asset tracking systems to document installations and updates (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira, or proprietary systems).
  • Familiarity with PoE, VoIP cabling needs, WAP deployment considerations and data center cabling topologies (hot/cold aisle).
  • Knowledge of safety standards and certifications such as OSHA 10/30 and safe ladder, lift and confined space practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in telecommunications, electronics or related field preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical certificate in Telecommunications, Networking, Electronics, or related trade school program.
  • Industry certifications such as BICSI Installer, Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician, or relevant vendor certifications are advantageous.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Demonstrated experience with OTDR testing, fusion splicing, Fluke certification reports, and adherence to TIA/BICSI standards.
  • Experience working on multi-site rollouts, large-scale enterprise deployments, or data center installs with vendor coordination and client sign-off processes.
