Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Develop, implement and maintain calibration procedures, protocols and documentation for a variety of instrumentation, measurement systems and test equipment.
  2. Perform routine and non‑routine calibration, verification and testing of devices such as flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature sensors, electrical meters and control instrumentation to ensure performance to specification.
  3. Analyse calibration data, identify anomalies, trends and measurement deviations, and drive corrective actions to improve accuracy and measurement reliability.
  4. Maintain detailed calibration records, certificates, traceability logs and audit documentation in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025, UKAS, Nadcap and other accreditation or regulatory standards.
  5. Coordinate with engineering, production, quality assurance and maintenance teams to integrate calibration requirements into equipment design, production processes and service programs.
  6. Perform root‑cause analysis on measurement failures or out‑of‑tolerance conditions, recommend corrective/preventive actions and ensure implementation of remedial measures.
  7. Lead equipment procurement, installation, set‑up and commissioning of new instrumentation and calibration systems, including selection of reference standards, software tools and accessories.
  8. Oversee and schedule calibration workloads, manage calibration lab or site activities, ensure workload is prioritised, deadlines are met and downtime is minimised.
  9. Train and mentor calibration technicians and junior engineers on calibration best practices, standard methods, safety protocols and documentation requirements.
  10. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process inefficiencies, recommending automation or technology upgrades and implementing calibration best practices.
  11. Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality management system requirements in the calibration environment, including equipment handling, test rig safety and hazard mitigation.
  12. Participate in internal and external audits, inter‑laboratory comparisons (ILC), measurement system evaluations and accreditation preparation, providing evidence of calibration activities and traceability.
  13. Collaborate with vendors, service providers and internal stakeholders to evaluate and manage external calibration services, outsourcing needs and vendor performance.
  14. Maintain and manage the calibration library of reference standards, control equipment, test rigs and measurement instrumentation, ensuring validity, maintenance schedules and spares availability.
  15. Support equipment repair, refurbishment and decommissioning activities when measurement systems fall outside calibration tolerance or become obsolete.
  16. Develop and maintain calibration schedule strategies, margin planning for scheduled calibration downtime and ensure operational readiness of measurement systems.
  17. Interface with software and hardware systems to implement data collection, calibration automation, measurement trending, and digital records management.
  18. Conduct environmental, temperature/humidity or altitude variation testing for instruments that operate under extreme conditions, ensuring calibration integrity across usage ranges.
  19. Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of calibration methods, industry standards, measurement technologies, regulatory changes and integrate innovations into calibration practices.
  20. Provide technical support and consultation to stakeholders: explain calibration results, instrumentation limitations, traceability issues and measurement uncertainty in non‑technical language.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad‑hoc data requests, exploratory measurement analysis and instrumentation performance trending for the organisation.
  • Contribute to the calibration organisation’s strategic roadmap by recommending calibration system upgrades, lab expansion or digital calibration management platforms.
  • Collaborate with business units and engineering teams to translate calibration or measurement needs into project or system requirements.
  • Participate in project planning, hand‑overs and calibration readiness reviews within the engineering or production teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • In‑depth understanding of calibration principles, instrumentation, measurement uncertainty, reference standards and traceability requirements (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, UKAS).
  • Proficiency with calibration software, data acquisition systems, measurement tools and test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, flow meters, sensors, pressure/temperature instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical skills including statistical analysis for measurement results, trending, root‑cause investigation and error modelling.
  • Ability to draft, review and manage calibration procedures, work instructions, certificates and compliance documentation.
  • Competence in equipment verification, instrument repair/refurbishment, and performing corrective actions in calibration systems.
  • Experience scheduling calibration workloads, managing calibration labs or field calibration programs and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.
  • Skilled in using engineering software (e.g., MATLAB, Excel, data logging tools), interpreting measurement data and generating calibration reports.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation frameworks (such as CME, Nadcap, AS9100, cGMP) and implementing calibration controls accordingly.
  • Capability to lead calibration projects, select and manage vendors, coordinate external calibration services and manage budgets for calibration equipment.
  • Hands‑on experience with test rigs, environmental chambers, instrumentation for extreme conditions (temperature, altitude) and validating calibration across usage ranges.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation), Physics, Metrology or a related technical discipline.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree with additional qualifications in metrology, quality systems, measurement science or relevant certification (e.g., ASQ, NIST, technician certification)
