Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform precise calibrations of electronic, mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, and pneumatic measurement instruments (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, temperature baths, pressure calibrators, torque wrenches, flow meters) according to manufacturer procedures and company controlled methods to ensure equipment meets specified tolerances and performance standards.

- Maintain and operate master standards and reference equipment, performing routine verification and inter-lab comparisons to preserve NIST-traceable measurement integrity and calibration chain of custody.
- Develop, update, and validate calibration procedures, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new instruments and custom test fixtures to ensure repeatable, auditable calibration activities.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and functional checks on test instruments and laboratory fixtures to reduce downtime, extend equipment lifespan, and identify failing components before they impact production or test outcomes.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and adjust measurement instruments to restore accuracy, documenting root cause analysis and corrective actions, and coordinate repairs with vendors when component replacement is required.
- Manage a scheduled calibration program using CMMS or Calibration Management Software (e.g., Maximo, SAP PM, Beamex, GageList), including scheduling, tracking due calibrations, and escalating out-of-tolerance conditions to stakeholders.
- Perform measurement uncertainty analysis and error budgeting for critical instruments and processes, explain uncertainty components to engineers and quality teams, and recommend calibration intervals based on statistical evidence and risk assessment.
- Support incoming inspection and qualification of new test equipment by performing baseline calibration, functional verification, and qualification reports to establish initial state and shelf-life for instruments.
- Execute calibration of on-site portable and field instruments, including set-up of field calibration rigs, environmental compensation, and verification under real-world conditions while ensuring safety protocols and access authorizations.
- Provide technical support and training to production, maintenance, and laboratory personnel on proper use, handling, and storage of calibrated instruments and on best practices to prevent instrument drift or damage.
- Maintain detailed calibration records, logs, and equipment history in electronic or paper records consistent with audit readiness, quality management systems, and regulatory requirements (e.g., 21 CFR Part 11 where applicable).
- Participate in internal and external audits, supplier assessments, and ISO/17025 accreditation activities by preparing evidence, answering auditor questions, and implementing corrective actions for nonconformities related to calibration processes.
- Coordinate with procurement and vendors to source reference standards, replacement parts, and calibration services; evaluate vendor calibration certificates for traceability and scope conformity.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives for calibration lab efficiency, including workflow optimization, inventory management of standards, and introduction of automated calibration solutions or data capture tools.
- Perform Gage R&R and capability studies for critical measurement systems, collaborating with quality and process engineers to validate measurement processes and recommend improvement actions.
- Ensure environmental monitoring and control for calibration labs (temperature, humidity, vibration) and document environmental conditions during calibration to guarantee valid measurement results.
- Prepare and maintain master equipment lists, calibration labels/tags, and asset identification to support quick traceability and reduce search time for due instruments.
- Manage out-of-tolerance investigations by quarantining affected instruments, conducting impact assessments on past measurements, notifying stakeholders, and coordinating retrospective corrective actions.
- Apply electrical and mechanical measurement techniques, including soldering, connector replacements, small mechanical repairs, and alignment checks, to support rapid turnaround of calibration work.
- Configure and maintain calibration workstation software, data acquisition systems, and automated test routines to capture measurement data, generate calibration certificates, and integrate with enterprise systems.
- Support cross-functional projects such as new product introduction (NPI) or process validation by providing calibration input, performing instrument qualification, and ensuring measurement traceability for test systems.
- Maintain high standards of safety and compliance by following lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and safe work practices when calibrating potentially hazardous equipment.
- Communicate calibration status, trends, and risk to leadership through regular reports and dashboards, recommending budget or resource allocations to address aging test assets and critical calibration needs.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 2–7 years of hands-on calibration, metrology, or test equipment maintenance experience.
Preferred: 5+ years of progressive calibration experience in laboratory, manufacturing, or field service environments with documented work supporting ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accreditation and demonstrable experience with a broad range of test & measurement instruments.
