Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) including 2D, M-mode, color Doppler, spectral Doppler, tissue Doppler, and quantification (LV/RV size and function, valve assessment, diastolic function) while applying current ASE guidelines and facility protocols to ensure diagnostic quality.
- Conduct transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) studies under cardiologist supervision, including probe insertion and manipulation, monitoring patient tolerance, and producing diagnostic-quality multiplanar images for procedural and diagnostic needs.
- Execute stress echocardiography (exercise and pharmacologic) by coordinating pre-test screening, monitoring ECG and vital signs, acquiring baseline and peak images, and recognizing and documenting ischemic changes or complications during testing.
- Administer and image contrast-enhanced echocardiography per institutional policy—preparing contrast agents, monitoring for adverse reactions, capturing opacification and myocardial perfusion images, and documenting findings for physician interpretation.
- Acquire and post-process three-dimensional (3D) and speckle-tracking/strain imaging studies when available, optimizing probe settings and image planes to support advanced quantification of chamber volumes, valve anatomy, and myocardial mechanics.
- Review patient medical history, consult referring physician orders and prior imaging, and tailor each echocardiographic study to the clinical question while communicating pertinent findings to the interpreting cardiologist in real time when necessary.
- Prepare and maintain ultrasound equipment and transducers by performing daily system checks, calibrations, minor troubleshooting, cleaning, and coordinating preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted lab operations and equipment safety.
- Archive images and cine loops into PACS and facility EMR accurately and promptly, ensuring all measurements, labels and demographic details are complete and that studies meet billing and QA criteria.
- Produce preliminary technical documentation and measurements with narrative descriptions according to department templates and assist cardiologists by highlighting abnormal findings that require urgent attention.
- Provide patient-centered care by explaining procedures, obtaining informed consent when required, positioning and draping patients appropriately, and ensuring patient comfort, privacy, and safety throughout the imaging process.
- Monitor and document patient vitals and ECG tracings during stress tests and invasive procedures, recognizing signs of hemodynamic instability and escalating care immediately according to protocol.
- Maintain strict infection control, single-use and sterilization procedures for TEE probes and other invasive equipment in accordance with facility policies and manufacturer recommendations.
- Participate in multidisciplinary cardiology procedures (e.g., intraoperative TEE, structural heart procedures, electrophysiology support) by providing real-time imaging, coordinating with procedural teams, and maintaining sterile field awareness when applicable.
- Assist in coding and charge capture for echocardiography procedures by accurately documenting CPT codes, modifiers, and clinical indications to support appropriate reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
- Train, mentor and precept students or new hires—providing hands-on instruction in image acquisition techniques, lab protocols, and professional standards while documenting competency checklists and progress.
- Participate in quality assurance (QA) and performance improvement activities by reviewing study quality, tracking key performance indicators (turnaround time, repeat rates), and implementing corrective actions to improve diagnostic yield and patient throughput.
- Maintain up-to-date competency and regulatory documentation by completing mandatory continuing medical education (CME), echo-specific training, BLS/ACLS renewals, and credentialing for ARDMS / CCI / RDCS as required.
- Collaborate with clinical teams, cardiologists, nurses, and scheduling staff to prioritize emergent vs elective studies, optimize patient flow and reduce wait times while ensuring appropriate triage of urgent cardiac imaging requests.
- Support research and protocol-driven imaging projects by adhering to study protocols, obtaining required consents, acquiring standardized datasets, and documenting deviations or adverse events for the study team.
- Perform limited or focused cardiac ultrasound (POCUS / bedside echo) in acute care settings under physician direction—obtaining targeted views to answer focused clinical questions such as pericardial effusion, gross LV function or volume status.
- Maintain accurate, legible records of procedures, patient interactions, and equipment issues in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding test results logistics, follow-up recommendations and any necessary pre- or post-procedure preparation to promote adherence and reduce no-shows.
- Stay current with professional standards and technological advances in echocardiography by attending conferences, vendors’ in-services and active participation in professional societies to continuously elevate lab capabilities.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Associate degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Technology, or related allied health field from an accredited program.
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Sonography, or Health Sciences; additional certifications or advanced coursework in echocardiography or cardiovascular physiology preferred.

Experience Requirements
