Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Prepare patients for cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures, including explaining processes, obtaining consent, positioning patients on tables or beds and attaching monitoring equipment.
  2. Operate and calibrate cardiographic equipment such as ECG machines, hemodynamic monitors, blood gas analyzers, and cardiac output measurement systems to ensure accurate data capture.
  3. Conduct non‑invasive tests including resting ECGs, stress tests (treadmill or bicycle), Holter monitoring or ambulatory ECG recording and preliminary analysis of results.
  4. Assist cardiologists and interventional teams in invasive procedures (e.g., cardiac catheterisation, angiography, pacemaker/ICD implants) by setting up sterile fields, handing instruments and monitoring patient vitals.
  5. Monitor patient physiology during procedures—track heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and intervene or alert physician should abnormalities arise.
  6. Maintain and troubleshoot diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular equipment, ensure proper sterilisation, inventory of supplies, and perform quality control checks and maintenance logs.
  7. Record, document and manage patient test results, procedure logs, equipment calibration records and database entries in compliance with hospital policy, regulatory standards and privacy laws.
  8. Position and support imaging or monitoring systems (e.g., ultrasound, fluoroscopy, echocardiography) to capture high‑quality diagnostic images, and assist in interpreting or submitting preliminary findings to cardiologists.
  9. Conduct and monitor pacing, electrophysiology and device‐related tests including loop monitors, pacemaker testing and reprogramming under direct supervision where permitted.
  10. Monitor radiation safety and equipment safety procedures in invasive cardiac labs, ensure PPE usage, shielding and adherence to radiologic and lab safety standards.
  11. Assist with patient preparation for interventional catheterisation lab cases: manage IV access, sedation monitoring, contrast media administration (where authorised), and coordinate with nursing and radiology staff.
  12. Participate in multidisciplinary care teams including cardiology, nursing, anaesthesiology and imaging services to ensure procedural readiness, patient safety and smooth workflow through the cardiovascular service line.
  13. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, audit procedural outcomes, monitor equipment performance, analyse trends of procedure success or complications and recommend improvements in workflow or instrumentation.
  14. Maintain ongoing clinical competence by attending training, keeping certifications current (e.g., BLS, ACLS, RCIS/RCES) and staying informed on advancements in cardiovascular technology and clinical protocols.
  15. Maintain patient comfort and safety—assist with positioning, sedation monitoring, addressing patient questions or anxiety, and provide post‐procedure instructions or care coordination as needed.
  16. Manage cardiac lab environment: ensure equipment readiness for scheduled procedures, check supplies, calibrate monitors, coordinate with clinical engineering or vendors for equipment repairs or upgrades.
  17. Provide technical support for stress testing labs and monitoring services—including adjusting treadmill speeds, monitoring ECG and hemodynamics, documenting exercise protocols and assisting with recovery phases.
  18. Communicate effectively with patients, families and team members about procedures, follow‐up care, and any urgent findings that require physician attention or escalation.
  19. Adhere strictly to infection control, privacy (HIPAA or equivalent), equipment cleaning and departmental policies ensuring safety of patients and staff during all cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  20. Schedule and coordinate patient workflow for the cardiovascular service line: track procedure status, prepare documentation, liaise with scheduling, nursing and radiology to optimize throughput and minimise delays.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad‑hoc data requests and exploratory analysis of cardiovascular service line metrics (throughput, turnaround time, equipment utilisation) to inform operational improvements.
  • Contribute to the cardiology or imaging department’s strategic roadmap by recommending instrumentation upgrades, process automation or workflow enhancements.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (imaging, clinical engineering, IT) to translate cardiovascular diagnostic needs into system enhancements or technical requirements.
  • Participate in shift hand‐offs, team meetings and training sessions to ensure seamless transition across tech teams and maintain high service standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional equipment including ECG/ECG machines, cardiac monitors, hemodynamic systems, ultrasound/echocardiography, fluoroscopy and blood gas analyzers.
  • Skilled in monitoring and interpreting vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, cardiac rhythms, ECG tracings and exercise stress test results.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
Associate degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Cardiology Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography or related allied health field.
Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Cardiovascular Technology, Cardiac Sonography, or equivalent advanced training and certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
1‑3 years of experience as a Cardiac or Cardiovascular Technologist in a hospital, catheterisation lab, or diagnostic cardiology department.
Preferred:
3‑5 years (or more) of progressive experience, including involvement in invasive cardiology or electrophysiology procedures, leadership roles or specialised certifications.
