Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise daily cargo transport operations across assigned terminals or routes, including scheduling drivers/crew, assigning loads, and monitoring in-transit freight to meet on-time delivery targets and customer service level agreements (SLAs).
- Develop, implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cargo handling, loading/unloading, securing, and stowage to protect freight integrity and comply with company policies and industry best practices.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance with local, national and international transportation laws and regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, IATA, IMDG, customs regulations), maintaining documentation and records for audits and inspections.
- Manage and validate all transport documentation — bills of lading, manifests, shipping instructions, hazardous goods declarations, customs entries and delivery receipts — ensuring accuracy, completeness and timely filing.
- Coordinate cross-functional handoffs with warehouse, customer service, customs brokerage, carriers, and third‑party logistics (3PL) partners to streamline pick-up, consolidation, transfer and final delivery of cargo.
- Oversee hazardous materials (HAZMAT/DG) handling and segregation procedures, ensure personnel certifications are current, and supervise the safe loading/unloading and placarding of dangerous goods per regulatory requirements.
- Monitor fleet and contractor carrier performance by tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time performance, detention, damage claims, and empty miles; generate regular performance reports and implement corrective actions.
- Manage route planning and load optimization using route-planning tools and TMS (Transportation Management System) to reduce transit times, fuel costs, and carbon footprint while maximizing vehicle utilization.
- Supervise inspections and preventative maintenance scheduling for vehicles, trailers and handling equipment; escalate and manage repairs to minimize downtime and ensure equipment safety and compliance.
- Lead daily operational briefings, shift handovers and incident debriefs; assign responsibilities, distribute manifests and address bottlenecks or service-impacting events in real time.
- Conduct root cause investigations for cargo damage, loss, delay or claims; prepare incident reports, coordinate claims resolution with customers and insurers, and implement process improvements to prevent recurrence.
- Train, mentor and coach drivers, ramp staff and warehouse personnel on cargo handling best practices, safety procedures, defensive driving, and customer service expectations; maintain training records and certifications.
- Authorize and manage overtime, shift patterns and resource allocation to meet fluctuating demand while controlling labor costs and maintaining service continuity during peak periods.
- Maintain and reconcile inventory control and cargo accountability records for loaded and in-transit shipments, including manifests, pallet ID systems, barcodes/RFID scans and cycle counts.
- Coordinate customs clearance activities with brokers and import/export teams, escalate documentation issues, and ensure timely submission of required documents to avoid demurrage and detention charges.
- Maintain accurate billing and transport cost records; review carrier invoices against contracts, approve payments within delegated authority, and identify opportunities to negotiate rates or consolidate shipments.
- Implement and maintain security measures for high‑value or sensitive cargo, including chain-of-custody protocols, secure storage, CCTV monitoring, and access control to reduce theft and tampering risk.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives (Lean/Six Sigma/Kaizen) to increase throughput, reduce handling steps, cut turnaround time and improve customer satisfaction scores.
- Use transport and warehouse management systems (TMS/WMS), EDI integrations and GPS telematics to monitor shipment status in real time, provide accurate ETAs, and proactively communicate exceptions to stakeholders.
- Manage vendor and carrier relationships, including contracting, performance reviews, capacity planning and dispute resolution to ensure reliable transport capacity and service quality.
- Prepare and present operational dashboards and executive summaries for senior leadership, highlighting trend analysis, risk areas and recommended investments or process changes.
- Ensure workplace safety by enforcing PPE usage, conducting safety audits, coordinating emergency response drills, and reporting workplace accidents or near misses in accordance with company policy.
- Supervise loading dock operations and equipment operators (forklifts, reach trucks, container handlers), ensuring certified operators, safe practices, and load weight/center-of-gravity compliance.
- Administer workforce performance management tasks including performance reviews, disciplinary actions, hiring, staffing forecasts and succession planning to maintain a resilient operations team.
- Lead peak season planning and special project execution (e.g., system migrations, new route rollouts, tariff changes), coordinating stakeholders to minimize disruption and meet launch milestones.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational certifications or technical diploma in logistics, transportation, or supply chain preferred.
