- Install cabinetry, countertops, shelving, and built-ins, accurately scribing and fitting units to walls, floors, and adjacent finishes.
- Build, set, and remove concrete forms and temporary supports, ensuring forms are plumb, level, and securely braced for concrete pours.
- Frame new construction, additions, and remodeling projects, including layout of walls, openings, rafters, trusses, and sheathing installation.
- Perform finish carpentry tasks including sanding, caulking, miters, coping, and complex trim work to achieve professional-grade finishes.
- Install exterior siding, soffits, fascia, and trim using appropriate fasteners and flashing to meet weatherproofing and code requirements.
- Accurately square and level walls, floors, and roofs using layout tools such as laser levels, transit levels, and chalk lines.
- Select, inspect, maintain, and safely operate hand tools and power tools including circular saws, table saws, miter saws, routers, nail guns, planers, and jointers.
- Perform repair, maintenance, and restoration carpentry for residential and commercial properties, diagnosing structural problems and proposing solutions.
- Follow local building codes, zoning laws, and OSHA safety standards, and coordinate inspections to ensure code compliance at each phase of construction.
- Install trim, hardware, thresholds, weather-stripping, and door hardware; shim and plane doors and windows for smooth operation and proper sealing.
- Coordinate with other trades (electricians, plumbers, HVAC, drywallers) to sequence work, resolve clashes, and ensure timely project progress.
- Execute precise material takeoffs, cutting lists, and measure twice / cut once workflow to minimize waste and control project costs.
- Communicate with project managers, general contractors, and clients to review scope, field-fit details, change orders, and schedule impacts.
- Estimate labor hours and material quantities for assigned tasks, contribute to bid packages, and support cost control measures on projects.
- Ensure work areas are secure and safe by setting up guardrails, scaffolding, ladders, fall protection, and implementing jobsite housekeeping best practices.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices and junior carpenters in safe work practices, tool use, layout techniques, and quality standards.
- Use specialty joinery techniques such as dovetail, mortise and tenon, and biscuit/lamello joining for custom wood assemblies where required.
- Install and adjust hardware systems, sliding doors, folding partitions, and custom millwork with accurate alignment and smooth operation.
- Prepare surfaces for finishes: sanding, filling gaps, applying wood preservatives, and coordinating with painters and finishers.
- Troubleshoot on-site problems, propose corrective measures, and implement field modifications while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic requirements.
- Maintain detailed documentation including daily logs, material receipts, equipment checklists, and as-built notes for project records.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings and jobsite planning to identify staging areas, material deliveries, and critical-path carpentry milestones.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory control of lumber, hardware, fasteners, and specialty materials to reduce delays and excess stock.
- Support project teams by providing input on buildability, sequence optimizations, and value engineering alternatives to improve budget and schedule outcomes.
