Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end casting process for feature films, television series, commercials, and theatre productions — from script breakdown to final offer — ensuring alignment with creative vision, director/producer notes, and production schedules.

  • Conduct and direct in-person and remote auditions, callbacks and chemistry reads to assess actor suitability, providing clear, timely feedback to creative stakeholders and producing well-documented audition reports.
  • Implement and manage self-tape and virtual audition workflows, including technical standards for submissions, turnaround expectations, and direction notes for remote performers to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Negotiate talent terms and agreements in partnership with line producers, legal and talent agents, ensuring compliance with union regulations (SAG-AFTRA, Equity) and production budgets; escalate complex negotiations as needed.
  • Create and maintain detailed casting budgets and forecasts, track spend against negotiated rates, and identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising creative needs.
  • Oversee casting schedules across all production phases, coordinating with production managers, ADs and locations to secure availability for rehearsals, fittings, pre-shoot meetings and shoots.
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with talent agents, managers, agencies, performers, acting schools, and community organizations to cultivate a diverse and reliable pool of talent.
  • Champion diversity, equity and inclusion in casting by proactively recruiting underrepresented actors, creative consultants and cultural advisors, and applying inclusive casting practices across projects.
  • Supervise and mentor casting team members — associates, assistants and casting coordinators — providing training on audition techniques, union rules, databases and professional development.
  • Administer and ensure completion of required paperwork: talent agreements, release forms, payroll documentation, background checks and any necessary work permits or visas for international performers.
  • Coordinate audition venues, casting calls and technical needs (production crews, camera/lights for self-tapes), ensuring professional and confidential audition environments and efficient throughput.

  • Conduct on-set casting duties during production to handle day-of talent changes, last-minute replacements, background actor management and continuity concerns, liaising with the production office in real time.
  • Maintain and update casting databases, actor reels, and contact lists; document casting decisions, rationales and audition notes to preserve institutional knowledge and ensure auditability.
  • Liaise with costume, hair, makeup and stunt departments to confirm actor suitability for wardrobe, prosthetics, stunts and safety requirements and coordinate necessary fittings or tests.
  • Lead outreach and community casting initiatives for nontraditional or non-union talent, local actors and cultural authenticity consultants; organize workshops and informational sessions to expand pools of available talent.
  • Oversee union and non-union casting logistics: scale negotiations, vouchers, dayplayer agreements, residuals tracking and ensuring timely submission to payroll and union reporting systems.
  • Advise producers and marketing teams on talent availability and potential publicity implications, and collaborate on promotional strategy when casting high-profile actors.
  • Evaluate and incorporate new casting technologies and platforms (self-tape portals, video review platforms, AI-assisted sorting tools) to improve efficiency while retaining artistic judgment and fairness.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Film/Television Production, Performing Arts, Communications, or equivalent professional experience in casting.

Preferred Education:
