Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement and monitor comprehensive herd health programs including vaccination schedules, disease prevention, parasite control, and regular health assessments to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve productivity across cow-calf, backgrounding or feedlot operations.
  • Plan and execute calving season operations: prepare calving facilities, provide assistance during dystocia, manage newborn care (colostrum administration, navel treatment), triage neonatal issues, and maintain detailed calving records.
  • Design and manage breeding programs (natural service and artificial insemination), including bull selection, heat detection, pregnancy checking, synchronization protocols, and recording parentage and performance data to improve herd genetics and fertility rates.
  • Create and manage nutritional plans tailored to life-stage and production goals: formulate rations, manage feeding schedules, source and evaluate hay, silage and supplemental feeds, monitor body condition scoring, and adjust diets to optimize growth, fertility and milk production.
  • Oversee pasture, grazing and forage management using rotational grazing, stock density planning, forage establishment, reseeding, fertilization schedules and soil testing to maintain sustainable carrying capacity and improve pasture quality.
  • Operate, maintain and repair farm machinery and equipment (tractors, loaders, balers, feed wagons, water pumps, trailers) and ensure scheduled maintenance to minimize downtime and maintain safe operations.
  • Inspect, repair and build fencing, gates, corrals, chutes and raceways to ensure secure containment, efficient cattle handling and compliance with animal welfare and safety standards.
  • Coordinate and supervise loading, transport and delivery of cattle to markets, processors or other facilities; ensure proper documentation, animal comfort during transport, and compliance with transport regulations.
  • Work with veterinarians to diagnose and treat herd health issues, coordinate herd treatments (metritis, pneumonia, foot rot) and implement biosecurity protocols (quarantine, disinfection, visitor controls) to mitigate disease risk.
  • Maintain accurate livestock records: births, weaning weights, vaccinations, treatments, breeding cycles, inventory, feed usage and mortality; use herd management software (e.g., CattleMax, AgriWebb, FarmWorks) and analyze data to inform management decisions.
  • Manage weaning, backgrounding and pre-conditioning programs, designing protocols that reduce stress and health issues, optimize weight gain, and improve post-weaning performance and market value.
  • Implement and monitor parasite control and hoof care programs including regular deworming schedules, pasture rotation to reduce parasite loads, and hoof trimming when necessary.
  • Oversee manure management, environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance related to waste storage, runoff control and nutrient management plans to protect water quality and comply with environmental regulations.
  • Recruit, train and supervise ranch staff and seasonal workers: assign daily tasks, instruct on safe cattle handling, machinery operation, recordkeeping and animal welfare practices; develop staff schedules and performance reviews.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets, cost controls and procurement: forecast feed, veterinary and equipment expenses, negotiate with suppliers, track operational KPIs and implement cost-saving strategies without compromising animal health.
  • Plan and execute breeding and culling decisions based on production records, genetic merit, market conditions and farm objectives to maximize herd profitability and longevity.
  • Oversee newborn and orphan calf protocols including bottle feeding, milk replacer management, weaning timelines and socialization to ensure survival and future productivity.
  • Maintain water systems and delivery infrastructure (pumps, tanks, pipelines, troughs) to ensure consistent water supply, especially during drought or freezing conditions.
  • Lead and execute emergency response and contingency planning for drought, fire, floods or animal disease outbreaks, including evacuation plans, emergency feed sources and communication with authorities.
  • Coordinate on-farm processing activities or relationships with processors (e.g., scheduled on-farm slaughter, custom harvest) including humane handling, recordkeeping and carcass disposition when applicable.
  • Manage marketing, sales and procurement of livestock: monitor market trends, identify sale timing for calves and cull animals, coordinate consignment or direct sales, and maintain relationships with buyers, transporters and feedlots.
  • Implement and maintain animal welfare, occupational health and safety programs: ensure PPE use, provide worker safety training, reduce risks associated with handling and machinery, and enforce humane handling standards.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and capital improvement planning: prioritize repairs, upgrades to handling systems, fencing, housing and water infrastructure and seek cost-effective investments to improve operational efficiency.
  • Supervise on-farm crop and forage production (hay making, silage harvesting, seed selection) that supports feeding programs including machinery scheduling, storage protocols and quality testing.
  • Liaise with extension agents, agricultural lenders and advisors to leverage research, grants, programs and best practices that improve production, sustainability and financial performance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
