Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate company commercial motor vehicles (Class A or Class B) safely and efficiently on assigned routes — including local, regional, and long-haul OTR runs — while maintaining compliance with FMCSA and company policies.
Perform thorough pre-trip inspections of tractor, trailer, brakes, lights, tires, coupling devices, and safety equipment; identify and report defects immediately to maintenance and do not operate unsafe equipment.

Follow route plans and schedules, use GPS and telematics systems for route optimization, and proactively communicate delays, traffic issues, or mechanical problems to dispatch.
Adhere to DOT drug and alcohol testing policies, maintain a valid medical examiner’s certificate (DOT physical), and keep all required licensing and endorsements current (CDL Class A/B, HazMat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples).
Provide professional, courteous customer service at pick-up and delivery locations; complete required paperwork, obtain signatures, verify delivery receipts, and resolve minor shipping discrepancies on-site.
Perform safe backing, parking, coupling and uncoupling of trailers, and operate lift gates, pallet jacks, and other onboard equipment as required by route and freight specifications.

Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and ongoing driver development initiatives to maintain certifications and adopt best practices for defensive driving and cargo handling.
Monitor vehicle telematics and onboard diagnostics to identify drivability issues; collaborate with maintenance to minimize downtime and improve fleet reliability.
Execute intermodal transfers, container moves, or specialized freight handling (e.g., refrigerated loads, flatbed securement) according to company standard operating procedures and industry regulations.
Maintain professional appearance and conduct while representing the company; adhere to all client site security protocols and access requirements.
Follow environmental and waste handling guidelines when transporting regulated materials; ensure proper disposal of contaminated materials or cleanup per company and regulatory standards.
Support timely load planning by communicating capacity, equipment constraints, and route limitations to dispatch and logistics planners to optimize utilization.
Comply with weight limits, securement requirements, and local/state permits for oversized or overweight loads; assist in acquiring necessary permits and following escort vehicle procedures when required.
Engage in continuous improvement by reporting process gaps, safety hazards, or route inefficiencies and proposing practical solutions to reduce cost and improve on-time delivery performance.
Maintain clean and secure custody of shipping documentation, bills of lading, and chain-of-custody paperwork; ensure correct handling of high-value or sensitive shipments.
Train and mentor junior drivers and new hires on route procedures, safety policies, and company culture when assigned as a senior or lead driver.

Secondary Functions

Assist warehouse teams with staging, palletizing, and documenting loads during peak periods; coordinate handoffs to minimize dwell time.
