Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read and interpret blueprints, project plans, and specifications to determine concrete placement locations, elevations, slopes and joint layouts; translate plans into actionable finishing sequences.
- Set up, align and brace forms and forms accessories for sidewalks, curbs, patios, footings and slabs to the required grade and alignment, ensuring formwork integrity before concrete placement.
- Spread, level and screed freshly poured concrete using straightedges, vibratory screeds, and hand tools to achieve required flatness and elevations; maintain consistent thickness and slope tolerances.
- Use bull floats, darbies, magnesium and wooden floats to consolidate surfaces and remove bleed water, preparing the slab for finishing operations without overworking the surface.
- Operate power trowels and hand trowels to produce smooth or textured finishes as specified; control timing and machine settings to achieve desired surface density and appearance.
- Install control and expansion joints with hand tools or jointers and, when required, saw-cut joints to prevent random cracking and maintain joint dimensions per specifications.
- Finish edges and joints to specified radii using edging tools, groovers and corner tools to produce clean, durable edges on slabs, sidewalks and curbs.
- Perform concrete placement from wheelbarrows, pumps or chutes, working with pump operators to control flow, prevent segregation and ensure continuous, even pours.
- Place and consolidate reinforced steel (rebar) and wire mesh before and during concrete placement; ensure proper cover and positioning relative to forms and finished surfaces.
- Apply curing compounds, wet curing methods, plastic sheeting or curing blankets to protect fresh concrete from moisture loss and temperature extremes, following manufacturer and spec requirements.
- Install surface treatments including broom finishes, textured finishes, stamped patterns, exposed aggregate, color hardeners, stains, and sealers to achieve decorative and functional surfaces as specified.
- Perform concrete repairs including patching, spall repair, saw cutting and sealing, dowel installation, and surface profiling to extend life and restore functionality of existing slabs and structures.
- Operate and maintain finishing equipment and tools: power trowels, plate compactors, vibrators, grinders, saws, mixers and pumps; perform pre-shift inspections and routine maintenance.
- Conduct on-site quality control checks: slab flatness/levelness (F-number/FF/FL), slump and air entrainment verification, and visual inspection to ensure compliance with engineering tolerances and specifications.
- Mix small batches of concrete and apply admixtures or accelerants for controlled setting times on site when required by weather or schedule constraints.
- Coordinate with concrete vendors and batch plants to confirm mix designs, delivery schedules, batch adjustments and on-site disposal plans for excess materials.
- Maintain clean, safe work areas, remove form debris, and ensure excavations and subgrades are prepped and compacted to specified densities prior to placement.
- Follow and enforce OSHA and site-specific safety protocols: PPE, fall protection, hazardous materials handling, heat stress prevention and lockout/tagout when servicing powered equipment.
- Mentor and train junior finishers, apprentices and laborers on finishing techniques, tool use, safety practices and quality expectations.
- Document work performed including daily logs, materials used, joint layouts, curing schedules and any deviations from plans; communicate issues and schedule impacts to superintendents and project managers.
- Coordinate sequencing with other trades (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) to ensure embedments, sleeves and penetrations are installed prior to concrete placement.
- Manage time efficiently on multi-site projects to meet project milestones and rush schedules while maintaining finishing quality and durability.
(Expanded examples of tasks are included for completeness and to optimize candidate matching by differentiating flatwork, formed concrete, decorative and repair responsibilities.)
Secondary Functions
- Assist in estimating labor and material needs for concrete finishing scopes during bidding and pre-construction meetings.
- Participate in pre-pour meetings to confirm logistics, access, traffic control and concrete truck placement plans.
- Maintain inventory of consumables (jointing tools, blades, sealers, curing compounds) and request replacements to avoid work stoppages.
- Perform basic crew scheduling and coordinate subcontractor interfaces for joint pours and specialty finishing trades.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting tool, process or material changes that improve productivity, reduce waste or increase finished quality.
- Clean, maintain and store tools and equipment properly; arrange for repairs or parts replacement as needed.
