Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, triage and decontaminate contaminated surgical instruments, endoscopes and reusable devices following manufacturer IFUs (instructions for use), AAMI and facility infection prevention protocols to reduce risk of cross-contamination and ensure patient safety.

  • Operate and validate sterilization equipment (steam autoclave, low-temperature sterilizers such as STERRAD or Steris) and load configurations per cycle type; perform and document chemical and biological monitoring, Bowie-Dick tests and routine sterilizer maintenance checks in compliance with AAMI and facility policies.
  • Package and label sterile trays, pouches and containers using proper packaging materials, sterilization indicators and expiration dating procedures; ensure all sterile items bear traceability and lot information when required.
  • Prepare, stage and deliver OR case carts and procedural supplies with accuracy, performing final set-up checks and verifying instrument counts, accessories and implants with surgical staff to minimize delays and support patient safety.
  • Inventory and stock sterile storage areas, supply rooms and point-of-care locations; maintain par levels, rotate stock (FIFO), identify expirations and coordinate restocking with Materials Management/Purchasing to prevent shortages.
  • Receive and inspect incoming sterile supplies, implants and sterile devices; verify delivery documentation, temperature-sensitive shipments and vendor packing lists, and reconcile discrepancies via purchase order systems (e.g., ERP, SAP, Lawson).
  • Perform routine cleaning, calibration and basic troubleshooting of sterilization and decontamination equipment; coordinate preventative maintenance and vendor service calls to maintain operational uptime.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable documentation for sterilization cycles, instrument repairs, sterilizer monitoring results and weekly/monthly QA checks; prepare for and support regulatory inspections and internal audits.
  • Follow strict aseptic techniques, PPE protocols and hazardous material handling procedures (including cytotoxic drug spill protocols where applicable), ensuring compliance with OSHA, state regulations and facility infection control standards.
  • Use instrument tracking and sterilization management systems (e.g., Sterile Processing modules, instrument tracking barcodes/RFID) to log instrument usage, lifecycle status and location to support traceability and instrument recall processes.
  • Perform load planning and sterilization cycle optimization to meet fast-paced OR schedules, reduce turnaround times, and manage surge demands during multiple simultaneous surgical cases or emergencies.
  • Train and orient new staff and cross-train peer technicians on decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization procedures, and safety protocols; participate in competency assessments and continuous education activities.
  • Support implant and explant handling procedures including labeling, documentation and secure storage of implants, following regulatory and facility-specific chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Assist with sterile storage organization, environmental monitoring (temperature/humidity) and shelf-life management; identify and correct non-conforming storage conditions promptly.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary huddles with surgical services, nursing and supply chain teams to resolve instrument shortages, special requests and workflow bottlenecks.
  • Implement and recommend process improvements and Lean/5S initiatives to increase department efficiency, reduce instrument loss, and improve compliance with quality metrics.
  • Respond to urgent requests for specialty instrumentation, case changes and last-minute tray modifications, demonstrating flexibility and strong prioritization under pressure to support patient care.
  • Dispose of biohazardous waste, contaminated consumables and sharps according to facility policy; ensure proper segregation, labeling and transport to waste management services.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work environment; report safety hazards, near-misses and incidents through incident reporting systems and participate in corrective actions.
  • Support inventory analytics by generating basic cycle count reports, assisting with shrinkage investigations, and providing input to purchasing for high-turnover or shortage-prone items.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; basic health sciences or allied health coursework preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree in Healthcare, Allied Health or related technical field; completion of accredited Sterile Processing vocational program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
