Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluations, including focused history, physical exam, review of labs and diagnostic tests, and risk stratification to formulate and communicate individualized anesthetic plans in collaboration with the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Formulate and implement anesthetic plans for a broad range of surgical and procedural cases (general, regional, MAC, pediatric, obstetric, and cardiac when applicable) while continuously optimizing drug selection, dosing, and hemodynamic targets.
- Induce and maintain general anesthesia including airway management techniques (endotracheal intubation, LMA placement, bag-mask ventilation) and secure airway devices appropriate to patient and procedure.
- Manage intraoperative physiologic monitoring (arterial pressure, ECG, pulse oximetry, capnography, temperature, neuromuscular monitoring, depth of anesthesia) and titrate anesthetic agents and vasoactive medications to maintain stability.
- Place and manage invasive monitors and lines (arterial lines, central venous access, and assist with pulmonary artery catheters when credentialed) for hemodynamic assessment and medication delivery as indicated.
- Provide advanced ventilator management including selection of ventilator modes, adjustment of settings for complex pulmonary physiology, and troubleshooting of ventilator-related complications.
- Deliver regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve block techniques under the supervision of an anesthesiologist as permitted by facility privileging and credentialing; assist with ultrasound-guided procedures when trained.
- Administer and manage procedural sedation (MAC) for non-operating room procedures, ensuring appropriate patient selection, monitoring, and recovery.
- Participate in obstetric anesthesia care including labor analgesia initiation and management, epidural catheter management, and anesthesia for cesarean delivery as directed by supervising anesthesiologist and scope of practice.
- Provide standardized and thorough intraoperative documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) including anesthetic start/stop times, medication administration, airway management, events, and handoff notes.
- Conduct safe and effective emergence and extubation, manage immediate postoperative stabilization, and facilitate a clear handoff to PACU or ICU teams emphasizing airway, hemodynamics, pain control, and neurologic status.
- Evaluate and manage acute perioperative complications such as anaphylaxis, malignant hyperthermia recognition and initial management, severe hemodynamic instability, hypoxia, bronchospasm, and cardiac arrest as part of the resuscitation team.
- Provide postoperative pain management including multimodal analgesia planning, PCA management, and consultation with acute pain service in collaboration with anesthesia and surgical teams.
- Coordinate perioperative care across multidisciplinary teams (surgeons, nursing, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, CRNAs, and anesthesiologists) to improve flow, OR readiness, and patient safety.
- Participate in preoperative optimization pathways such as ERAS (enhanced recovery after surgery) by implementing evidence-based anesthesia strategies for opioid-sparing, normothermia, and fluid management.
- Maintain currency in anesthesia equipment and machine checks, ensure correct functionality of anesthesia delivery systems, monitors, and emergency airway carts prior to use.
- Provide on-call coverage, rapid response, and code team participation as scheduled; respond to trauma, obstetric, and other emergent activations requiring anesthesia expertise.
- Serve as a clinical educator and preceptor for CAA students, residents, or interdisciplinary staff, delivering bedside teaching, simulation training, and competency assessments.
