Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct a comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluation including review of medical history, physical exam, airway assessment, medication reconciliation, risk stratification and lab/test interpretation to identify patient-specific anesthesia risks and optimization needs.
- Formulate and document an individualized anesthesia care plan that outlines induction strategy, maintenance modality (volatile, TIVA, regional), airway approach, analgesia plan and contingency plans for anticipated complications.
- Administer and manage general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), regional anesthesia (spinal, epidural, peripheral nerve blocks), and local anesthesia across a broad case mix including general surgery, orthopedics, OB/GYN (cesarean sections), trauma, ENT, vascular and pediatric procedures.
- Perform advanced airway management including awake intubation, rapid sequence induction, fiberoptic intubation, video laryngoscopy, supraglottic airway insertion and surgical airway assistance when required.
- Perform and interpret invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring (arterial lines, central venous pressure, cardiac output monitoring) and titrate vasoactive medications to maintain hemodynamic stability.
- Provide neuraxial anesthesia for labor analgesia and cesarean delivery, including epidural catheter management, spinal anesthesia dosing, combined spinal-epidural techniques and management of obstetric anesthesia emergencies.
- Deliver ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks, including pre-block assessment, ultrasound-guided needle placement, local anesthetic dosing and monitoring for block efficacy and complications.
- Manage intraoperative fluid therapy, blood product administration and transfusion protocols, guided by hemodynamic monitoring and institution transfusion thresholds.
- Recognize and manage anesthesia-related emergencies including anaphylaxis, malignant hyperthermia, severe hemorrhage, airway loss, cardiac arrest and postoperative respiratory compromise using ACLS/PALS protocols.
- Provide post-anesthesia care, including pain management, nausea/vomiting control, airway and respiratory support, and safe handoff to PACU/ICU teams with complete anesthesia records and post-operative instructions.
- Prescribe and manage perioperative analgesia and multimodal pain strategies, including opioid-sparing protocols, regional catheters and coordination with Acute Pain Services and outpatient pain follow-up.
- Maintain meticulous anesthesia documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) (Epic, Cerner or equivalent), including anesthesia start/stop times, medications, monitoring data, interventions, consents, and perioperative checklists for compliance and billing accuracy.
- Perform perioperative medication management, calculate and administer correct medication doses (including pediatric/weight-based dosing), and maintain secure handling and documentation of controlled substances per institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in multidisciplinary surgical time-outs, perioperative huddles, and team-based decision-making to optimize case flow, patient safety and OR utilization.
- Provide clinical supervision, mentorship and evaluation of SRNAs, students and new CRNA hires; plan and deliver simulation training and competency assessments as part of professional development programs.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, root cause analyses and development of evidence-based protocols to reduce perioperative complications and enhance patient outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with national anesthesia standards and guidelines (ASA, AANA), institutional policies, infection control practices and state licensing regulations.
- Maintain readiness for on-call responsibilities and rapid deployment to emergent cases, trauma activations and obstetric emergencies while balancing scheduled clinical assignments.
- Participate in equipment checks, maintenance and troubleshooting for anesthesia machines, ventilators, infusion pumps, ultrasound devices and airway adjuncts to ensure availability and safe function before cases.
- Collaborate with pharmacy, blood bank and supply chain to ensure appropriate medication selection, availability of reversal agents, blood products and specialty anesthesia supplies for complex and high-risk cases.
- Lead or participate in departmental committees related to patient safety, sedation oversight, clinical practice guidelines, credentialing and continuing education to support institutional anesthesia strategy.
- Engage in data-driven performance measurement by tracking clinical metrics such as PACU length of stay, unplanned ICU admissions, postoperative pain scores and anesthesia complication rates and acting on improvement opportunities.
- Provide culturally sensitive patient and family education about anesthesia choices, perioperative expectations, risks and recovery planning; obtain informed consent consistent with legal and ethical standards.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
